Changing NETBIOS name of produciton active directory environment

    Hi All,

Hope you all are in safe in this pandemic situation.

I am looking for some help from you all with your industry experience. :

I have requirement to change our netbois name of our AD to different name because currently we have it as local. I need to change it to company name.ex: contoso . We have around 2000 users in few countries. All are domain joined. would you please share your suggestions and experience on this? Will i get a downtime? do we need to rejoin the users PCs to domain? what kind of error we may face after change it?

Also is there anyone who migrated on-prem AD environment to complete azure AD ? will it possible and what are the pros and cons?

Looking forward to hear your experience on this :

    Thank you.

    :)

  2. Active Directory Computers list

    Hello,

I am trying to add an organizational unit to the active directory I created on my windows server 2016. However, I realize that there is no computer in the active directory computer list on my DNS domain
(Server Manager > Tools > AD Users and Computer > domain > Computers). I did set up ADDS, DNS and DHCP through server manager. Changed the Network settings, changed the system name. Every possible thing has been tried, but I fail to understand why there is
no computer in the active directory computer list on my DNS domain. The Domain name and the full computer name (Name.DomainName.com) does show up in the system properties. Please help me out.

  3. name changes??

If you desire a name change please do the following:

    • Ask yourself if you really need a name change.
    • Make sure you have a good reason.
    • Know what you want your new name to be before you request a name change.
    • Send Urlyin a PM containing a decent explanation of your reason as well as your desired name.

    Network "NetBios" display name change?

    Hi Dan,

You may try changing the network name set on your device by following the steps below:

Important:  This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully.
For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

    1. Open Registry Editor. Press Windows Key + R and type
      regedit
      and clicking OK.
    2. Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles"
    3. Click/tap on each long GUID number subkey in the left pane, and look at its
ProfileName string value in the right pane until you find the one that has the network name (ex. W24).
    4. Double click ProfileName string value to modify it.
    5. Type the name that you want under Value Data:
    6. Click OK.
    7. Restart your PC.

    Keep us posted.
