Changing the name of your Optical drive possible?

So ive spent some-odd hours trying to fix this and its not looking good. That in and of itself is perplexing but I figured if its doable, you guys here would know how!

So I'm aware of the means of which you can change your Drive letters, not an issue. I am even aware of several ways of labeling or "renaming" your drives. All has gone swimmingly until I arrived at my optical drive. FTR its a LG blu ray burner that shows up as "CD-Drive" in windows 10.

I want to rename the drive as Ive already changed the letter to what I had intended but am now stuck with the marginally inaccurate and personally undesireable label/name. I've tried all methods I can find and worst case they dont work at all, best case they append the name after the drive letter so instead of say CD-Drive (D*Smile I end up with CD-Drive (D*Smile Optical Drive. The ideal outcome would simply be "Optical Drive (D*Smile" for example.

Anyone able to help? Dont care what it takes!

    :)

Rename Optical Drives (without using labels)

    1. The optical drive is connected via SATA3 to the motherboard.

    2. No error message is given. As described in the initial question, the label changes the name after the drive letter, not the name before the drive letter.

Troubleshooting> There are no troubles with troubleshooting. The drive works just fine.

The computer is up to date as of 2/13/16, 9:52AM Central US Time.

Again, as belabored in the initial question; how does one change the label of the optical drive before the letter (encircled in blue in the picture).

EDIT: Is this just not possible? I haven't heard any response in awhile now.

Windows Explorer list view for DVD/CD/blu ray drives?

It's not about optical drives, there is no default for any drive.

It's a Windows peculiarity, often but not always, the label on an optical drive will default to the last media read, so if that was a DVD it shows as a DVD drive, if CD as a CD drive.
Not a lot you can really do about it other than try reading a Blueray disk and see if it changes to BDROM.
Renaming by any means will just append the name after whatever Windows has decided to call it today!

Yep, both ways ive tried with the same result. While the portable/gui is convenient and ideal for those who arent comfortable w/ mucking around in the registry - they operate the same way and achieve the same result unfortunately.
This stinks, but may be the only option I have at some sort of middle-ground for now. Amazed that its not changeable by any manual means. You can change just about ANYTHING in windows. Things much less mundane than the aforementioned. I digress.

Thank you both for taking the time to reply!

Out of curiosity, when does the name change back?
I suppose you could have a little script running in the background (e.g. Autohotkey) to reapply the change.

One of those things where MS clearly has a 1-track mind.

The change seems to be random, however here all optical drives show as type cdrom irrespective of what the label appears as.

That question came up on a forum several years ago [no longer in business] and the consensus arrived at was the ODDs themselves can't be directly written to like HDDs can be [has nothing to do with burning processes]. It probably would have needed a firmware change for the drive to rename it. HDDs can be Labeled as to name, I do it frequently with my computers.

Not sure if this still works, cannot test it for you since I no longer use Optical Drives, but you can give it a try.............you will find the link for "Drive Namer" here:
