Windows 10: Changing the name on a Microsoft account and changing the administrator

I am using my deceased father in laws PC. The Microsoft account is his and I do not have his password so I cannot download apps etc. How do I change that? Also, he is established as administrator and I want to change that to myself. Is there a way to do that without reloading Windows 10?

Editing the user profile depends on the type of your account. Before we proceed, we would like to confirm if you’re using a Microsoft account or a local account.



If you are using a Microsoft account, you can edit the sign-in name by following the steps below:

• Go to Settings.
• Select Accounts.
• Click Your info.
• Click the Manage my Microsoft account link.
• On your Profile, click Edit name.
• Change your username.
• Hit Save.
• Restart your computer.

If you have a local account, you can edit it by going to the Control Panel. Follow these steps:

• Type Control Panel in Search.
• Launch Control Panel.
• Click the Change account type link.
• Select your local account.
• Click the Change the account name link.
• Enter the new credentials.
• Hit Change Name.

I suggest you to follow the below steps to change the account name in Windows 10. Type user accounts in the search box and press enter and select change account name and try to change the account name and check if it helps.

Query about changing the account name

Since you have already changed the name on your Microsoft account, we suggest switching into a local account, and then log back in with your Microsoft account. This way, we can be sure that any changes made to your Microsoft account will be synced to your
local user account.

For steps on how to switch to a local account:

• Click on Start.
• Click on Settings.
• Click on Accounts.
• Under Your account, click on Switch to a local account.

To switch back to a Microsoft account:

• Follow steps 1-3 above to get to Accounts.
• Under Your account, click on Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.
