  1. Changing to New System Reserved After Cloning HDD to SSD

I used MiniTool Partition Wizard to clone an old HDD to an SSD. Both are plugged in via SATA.

Everything seemed to go well, however, when I hit F12 and try to boot into the SSD, a "j" appears and nothing happens. After googling it, it seems that I need to use the diskpart utility to assign drive letters. However, it looks like J has already been assigned to the proper drive. I'm also unable to select my SSD on the msconfig boot.

Both are visible in this screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/z4RQJiN.png

(The system is using the default System Reserved highlighted and C drive.)

I'm not sure where to go from here. The original system reserve that the PC uses to boot doesn't have a letter assigned to it. Should I remove J from my SSD?

My end goal is to wipe the original HDD and use it as backup storage. I'm not working with big files and want the PC to boot-up & run small scripts from the new SSD.

boot from cloned ssd installed on cd drive

    Mahesh,

I do not know what is wrong because I do not know anything about the cloning tool you used. I suspect that the missing element might well be the MBR - this needs to be included as it is the MBR that the computer looks to in order to identify the disk to
    boot from.

Note that my SSD did not end up with those two additional partitions before the boot partition:-

    • Mine just has the System reserved partition before the boot partition. Your first one was probably called the System reserved partition on your original HDD but has lost its name in the cloning - that makes me doubt the success of the cloning procedure/tool.
    • I don't know what the original purpose of that 16MB RAW partition was.

    • I followed the procedure suggested by the regular forum contributor JWStuart at

How to move from a smaller SSD to a larger SSD
. I know that JWS was changing SSDs rather than replacing an HDD with an SSD but the procedure was still generally applicable.
    • I used
      Acronis TI
to restore a system image to the SSD. It was bootable straightaway. [Acronis have always provided a free 30 day trial version that you might wish to use]
    • I used
      MiniTool Partition Wizard
to set up "partition alignment" / "partition offset" but that was definitely used in setting up afterwards [the SSD booted beforehand with no problems].

The only sensible suggestion I can make is that you repeat the whole procedure using JWS's guide and basing it on a system image of your HDD that is restored to the SSD.

You might also benefit from changing the title of your question [click on the blue
Edit control just underneath the question]. If you call it something like
Cloned SSD does not boot then you are more likely to attract the attention of those skilled in this subject such as JWStuart.

    Best of luck,

    Denis

Changing to New System Reserved After Cloning HDD to SSD

Restore Image or Clone from HDD to new SSD?

I have a single, non-partitioned (C:\ drive only) 500GB HDD in a desktop PC, using approx. 80 percent of it. I want to install a 500GB SSD, and clone or restore an image of the HDD to it. Once that's complete and successful, I plan to wipe the 500GB HDD
and then move my large libraries of media from the newly installed SSD to it. My future holds lots of video editing and compiling, so the extra storage will help, along with the better performance via the SSD (and upgraded RAM as well).

I'm unable to find after much research a definitive answer as to whether cloning the HDD to the SSD is better than restoring an image of the HDD to the SSD. I've read where cloning will carry over bad sectors and such where imaging will not. I think I'm
leaning toward image restore, keeping a copy of it on an external 1TB drive I have, to which I can periodically do image backups of the new, separate drives.

I'd also like to find a tutorial re: the same. Thanks in advance for any help.
