Windows 10: Changing username in netplwiz broke my password

Hi,I just used netplwiz to change my username. After doing so, I log out and went back to see if the change was visible. At that point I see on the lock screen that it still displays the old username. Strange. I type my password to log in and keep going, and ... "the password is incorrect"..!At this point I am totally helpless since- i cannot login on my computer- i have no other account to log in to, this was my only account on the computer - I am using the same password since years and I haven't changed it so I know the problem doesn't come from thereI am totally helpless, so if anybody has

Windows 10 netplwiz 'Users must enter a username and password Missing

I Had this problem with netplwiz 'Users must enter a username and password to use this computer' checkbox missing

But according to my research, this is an issue for some users only with Build 2004.....thought it was due to a corrupt user profile......so did the suggested registry mod & all is back to normal, meant to be `by design` by Microsoft to discourage passwords and use other means of logging in....need go to the following reg key and change the DWORD to 0 from 2.....would love any comments on this, but it worked for me

 

Strange variation on The username or password is incorrect"

To log in automatically, Advanced User Account Control Panel (netplwiz) stores your username as \\ComputerName\UserName.

Let's say your computer name is PC-1 and username Alan, netplwiz will save it as \\PC-1\Alan. If you now change your PC name to PC-2, your username will be changed, too, it being now \\PC-2\Alan. However, netplwiz is still trying to log you in with \\PC-1\Alan, a username which does no longer exit.

Solution which should work is to select Users must enter a username and password in netplwiz, restart and log in with password, then unselect Users must enter a username and password in netplwiz. Automatic log in should work now.

If you would just like to bypass Windows 10 password login, you may follow the steps below:

1. Type netplwiz in the Start menu search bar, then click the top result to run the command

2. Remove the tick from the box next to 'Users must enter a username and password to use this computer' and hit Apply

3. Enter your username and password, then re-enter your password.

4. Click Ok

5. Click Ok again to save the changes.
