Windows 10: CHKDSK appears to have hung on Win 10

My desktop Win 10 Pro crashed twice yesterday.


When I recovered I ran DISM.exe followed by SFC, no apparent problems.


Win 10 then reported drive issues and said to restart for repair.


Before I did I went into Disk management and ran CHKDSK on my D drive where the important stuff is and it said the drive did not need checking.


However, C drive OS and Programs had 3 errors that needed CHKDSK.


Rebooted and CHKDSK commenced. It got through the analysis stage fairly quickly, and said “Scanning and repairing drive C:: 100% complete” with the spinning activity icon.


It has now been like this for 24 hours and I have no idea if the program has hung, or if I should reboot again.

Any adivce on how to procede now will be gratefully received.

background (wallpaper) seems to be hung


I see on my background a picture from a series of pictures I wanted for a slide show. Went to Settings/Personalization/Backgrond and followed the steps once upon a time and I think it worked? Anyway, now the app appears to be hung and I don't know how to get it working. I've tried going through the settings and can change the background (behind the slideshow) color but nothing else. I found your forum and tried many of the ideas suggested to no avail. Can someone suggest how to get it working again?

"Win-X/Command Prompt (Admin) will bring up an environment where CHKDSK can run" Sorry. I don't understand your answer. I don't know what a command prompt is nor how to make it appear. Then once I got there, what would I do?

Is there a way to convert your answer to step by step? Thanks.
