Windows 10: chkdsk c: /r not working

hi i have au update on my desktop. i know it has some problems, but it works. i decided to run chkdsk c: /r. it only gets up to 10%, then it just sits there. i have run this before with the same problem. i have to shut down manually. is there a fix for this? thank you

Sounds like the hard drive developed some issues and all may not have been fixed. Best to check the drive even more.

After the above if the drive is ok :

Try running StartUp Repair from a Windows 10 boot disk or USB drive.

That often will work when running from the recovery environment does

not. You can try Option 5 here and run StartUp Repair to see if it helps.

You would need to make a bootable USB or DVD using the Media Creation Tool.

You can make a Windows 10 Install disk and try to use it to repair the present installation. Do not try to do a clean install with it however because if the upgrade was not fully activated for a few days then the clean install will not activate.

Make a Windows 10 Disk using the Media Creation Tool - select to install on another computer and the same version you have now. You can make a USB or DVD to boot with. Select Troubleshoot - Advanced Options - Automatic Repair.

boot with it - use method I outlined above.

Those recovery options you have tried so far is pretty exhaustive. The only thing left for you to do is to perform a reset from within the recovery environment itself.

Power on and off your computer three times

On the third time, your computer will boot into the Advanced Recovery environment

Click Advanced Options

Click Troubleshoot

Click Reset this PC

Click Keep my files

Choose your account

Enter your password

Click Continue

Click Reset

If that does not work:

Go to a working computer, download, create a bootable copy, then perform a clean install.

It is working, you just have to be patient. Sometimes chkdsk seems to stall and hang at one spot for hours.

 

That's optimism for you! There's no fixed time for chkdsk, it depends entirely on what type or errors it finds.
