Windows 10: chkdsk freezes, will not deal with disk errors

Windows 7 Home Premium SP-1Laptop250 GB HD with over 200 GB free spaceYes, I know Win7 is past end-of-life. I want to use this old borrowed laptop to display disassembly videos to show me how to open up my own laptop so I can replace some parts. I just need to get this old laptop working enough to do what I need to show videos and help sites.It's slow as heck, and it reports that the drive has never been defragmented. Defragmenter won't complete, freezes partway through. In spite of that, I can open files, browse web sites, etc. normally.HD Tune found 0.1% damaged blocks on the drive.In Safe M

Disk Read Error

/p flags good, I'm still thinking it's something in your boot sector and not hardware related.

Try this:

Insert your XP disk and boot from the disk
Select recovery console
follow the promts until you are in DOS
C:\windows
at the above prompts type FIXMBR

Why?
This will fix the Mater Boot Record for Windows it will ask you if you are sure and follow the prompts

once complete type CHKDSK /r
that is CHKDSK space /r
this will check the disk and repair any bad sectors

once complete type exit

 

chkdsk c: /F

It might be an error on the drive. We suggests that you follow the troubleshooting steps below:

• Run Disk Cleanup utility to clear your junk files.
• Open an elevated CMD type sfc /scannow and hit Enter to run the System File Checker.
  
• Once the scan is completed, restart your computer. Remember to exit ChkDsk
  during boot.
• Next, again open CMD as admin type
  Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and hit Enter to repair the Windows image.
• Now see if ChkDsk able to complete the scan.

Note: Before doing the steps, make sure you save a back up of your files.

Disk Read Error

Ran chkdsk from XP CD in recovery mode. Said it appeared in good condition, ran with /p flag, still said it was fine. Any other suggestions?
