CHKDSK on 1TB WD Passport external hard drive see Updates below

Hi - could an external hard drive get damaged when CHKDSK is running and the computer is shutdown is performed from the Start menu or by pressing the power button?

    Background:

I suspect a process was running when a 1TB WD passport with 670 GB of data became disconnected from a PC running Windows 10 with latest updates. I reconnected the external hard drive and received an "I/O error" message when trying to open a subfolder. The file structure is [root\subfolder1.1\subfolder2.2020]; but was able to open and read a file from [root\subfolder1\subfolder2.2019].

I tried to write to [root\subfolder1.2] and received the following detail message that was also logged in evntvwr:

Chkdsk was executed in scan mode on a volume snapshot.

    Checking file system on F:

Stage 1: Examining basic file system structure...

Attribute record of type 0x80 and instance tag 0x3 is cross linked

starting at 0x14f3fdc for possibly 0x9 clusters.

Found corrupt basic file structure for "\subfolder1.2\filename" <0x11,0x3bcce>"

was not able to send command for self-healing due to lack of memory.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stage 1: Examining basic file system structure...

Some clusters occupied by attribute of type 0x80 and instance tag 0x3

starting at 0x14f3fdc for possibly 0x9 clusters.

Found corrupt basic file structure for "\subfolder1.2\filename" <0x11,0x3bcce>"

was not able to send command for self-healing due to lack of memory.

in file 0x3bcce is already in use.

Deleting corrupt attribute record 0x80, ""

    from file record segment 0x3BCCE.

"chkdsk /scan" is aborting due to self-healing command failure; 0xc0000102

"chkdsk /f" will be required to repair the volume"

    The following action was taken:

    0. open windows explorer

    1. select the drive to access the shortcut menu

    2. click on properties > tools > check

    3. Dialog box displayed message:

    - "You don't need to scan the drive" and an option "to scan the drive" was displayed

    4. I selected "Scan the drive"

    5. Dialog box displayed message:

    - "Windows can't repair the drive while it's in use" and option to select "Repair now", "Repair on next restart", or "Cancel"

    6. I selected "Repair Now"

    7. Dialog box displayed message:

    - "Scanning and repairing"

    8. Dialog box displayed message:

    - "Scanning and repairing" with a green progress bar between 30%-50% and didn't really move.

    9. Event: at about 24-36 hours later the green progress bar disappeared

    10. NOW: at 72+ hours the external drive continues to run CHKDSK and the dialog box appears with no progress bar.

    Analysis:

    1. Task Manager shows 45% of memory is consumed by "Antimalware Service Executable > Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service". Please see other services running below.

    2. My understanding is there are CHKDSK consists of 5 stages and I have no idea where in the process CHKDSK may be, or if "Antimalware Service Executable" has blocked CHKDSK ... OR ... if the process that was detected to be running in step 5 above is blocking CHKDSK.

    3. Current run rate is 10 weeks if CHKDSK is running, and running at a rate of 2GB/hour to fix the "I/O error" problem on the contents of the subfolder.

    4. There may be other sectors that are damaged and repaired; the hard drive was started 2 years ago.

    Other stacked-ranked services are:

    - Antimalware Service Executable > Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service 515MB

    - Desktop Window Manager 42MB
    - Service Host: Diagnostic Policy Service > Diagnostic Service Policy 36MB
    - Task Manager 23MB
    - Start 22MB
    - IGCC 18MB
    - Killer Network Service 17MB
    - Windows Shell Experience Host 16MB
    - Service Host : DCOM Server Process Launcher 15MB
    > System Events Broker

    > Power
    > Plug and Play
    > DCOM Server Process Launcher
    > Background

    Next Steps:

    1. From the Start Menu, power down the computer to stop CHKDSK from running on the 1TB WD Passport.

    2. If #1 doesn't work execute force shutdown pressing power button

    3. Wait until...???

    4. Stop Antimalware Service Executable??

Stop Antimalware Service Executable> Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service??

    - note, the computer is not connected to internet and is only connected to WD 1TB My Passport via USB 3.0

    Updates:

    1. 2020-12-20; green progress bar disappeared maybe CHKDSK completed Stage 1 and is entering Stage 2??

    2. 2020-12-22; green progress bar re-appeared CHKDSK may be executing Stage 2??

Any advise is greatly appreciated >> thank you!
