  1. CHKDSK restarted itself at Stage 1 - can I hard reboot?

It's been running for like 22 hours and it was at Stage 4 but instead of getting to stage 5 it restarted at Stage 1... I don't want to wait another day, can I just cut the power to my PC? It literally did nothing just restarted itself (i started it with rebooting my pc yesterday not in windows). Can I hard reboot? Windows is on another drive and I backed up any information that I need.

I've read some info on checking the light on the drive and if it's not blinking it is safe to turn off as it's not being used at the moment. Is it true? Also, if I reboot, will Windows start just fine or will it direct me to the repair screen?

  2. Chkdsk stage 1

    Hi Ysabellllll,

I'm Paul, a Microsoft Community Member, and a Windows expert. I hope I can help you with your concern.

You can't stop CHKDSK process once it started. The safe way is to wait until it completes. Stopping the computer during the check might lead to filesystem corruption. Also. stopping the CHKDSK at stage 1-3 have a high risk of losing files.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted.

  4. CHKDSK restarted itself at Stage 1 - can I hard reboot?

    chkdsk /f /r E: freezes at stage

of chkdsk said I had errors on my external hard drive and shoul run disc repair.

from command prompt i ran chkdsk /f /r E: as suggested

but now the process stalls at stage 4: looking for bad clusters in user file data ... Progress: 19 of 114672 done; stage: 0%; Total: 0% ETA:30:05:46 ...

    what do I do now?
