Windows 10: chkdsk seems stuck and not doing anything.

I have a external drive with A LOT of bad sectors on it, it is connected by a sata to usb connector. I ran chkdsk F: /f /r and it failed so I added /x and it seemed to get on much better but has been stuck on 10% for the past hour and is at stage 2 of the process. Now, on my sata to usb connector I have a light that blinks if the drive is being used. It is not blinking, and about 10 minutes into the hour the drive stopped spinning normal HDD behavior if its not being used. The drive contains tax documents that are needed urgently, should I wait and hope it actually starts doing something aga

CHKDSK process stuck

I started my pc and got a "Auto repair could not repair your pc" message. I started looking up for something to help and saw alot of articles with the same steps to take.

After I did a few steps it didn't fix the repair issue. I continued with the steps and a CHKDSK was the next thing. I ran the command is it was instructed (chkdsk /r c.

Now it got stuck on

Progress 60768 of 83696 done; Stage 72%; total 20%

It's stuck like that for about 15min.

How do I safely stop the process?

I would suggest you read these, then decide how to proceed. Note 11% is a figure that has been observed.
Also consider with which parameters you are running chkdsk, and the comments about patience and time.

Since you mentioned that you have made a full backup of your SD card, you can try to fix it by following the steps below, but there is no guarantee of 100% success, so please be patient.

1. You can use the Ctrl + C shortcut in the Command Prompt to interrupt the process, and then run the command again to see if it succeeds. Also note that you may run Command Prompt as an administrator, as administrator privileges may be required during the repair phase.
   
2. Since you mentioned that you have made a full backup of your SD card, I suggest you format the SD card and then restore data from that backup. Yes, I have learned from your original post that you want to try to fix it without formatting SD card, unfortunately, according to my experience, formatting is the easiest and effective solution you can consider.
