  1. CHKDSK stage 1 potentially taking 70+ days to complete

Today, I tried accessing a particular folder on one of my drives and instead of opening, I got "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." Checking the SMART drive health via CrystalDiskInfo reported Good, but nonetheless, I couldn't access the drive folder. All other folders were able to be opened. Anyway, I started CHKDSK /f /r /x about 45 min ago and each bit of progress takes about 5 seconds to process. Is there any chance this will speed up at any point? Any way to make it speed up, or is this just my life for the next 2 1/2 months. Then again, I don't think I c

  2. Chkdsk taking almost two days

I used chkdsk /r on my 32GB SDHC card but it has already taken almost two days.

While I was listening to music, which was in the sd card, on my smartphone, suddenly it told me the sd card is corrupted and need to format the card. I used my laptop opening the SDHC card, it can read the directories but cannot access it. So I try "check disk" on the card.

After I typed chkdsk D: /r , the next line showed the type of the file system is FAT32 and something like "chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process", I typed Y to dismount the volume then it showed the serial number. Nothing has shown after this line.
I found that people always say about stage 1 to stage 5 or the percentage completed while chkdsk is running, but my console didn't show any of these or any progress.

What should I do now? Let it run for few more days or stop the process? Any suggestion?

  3. Chkdsk stage 1

    Hi Ysabellllll,

I'm Paul, a Microsoft Community Member, and a Windows expert. I hope I can help you with your concern.

You can't stop CHKDSK process once it started. The safe way is to wait until it completes. Stopping the computer during the check might lead to filesystem corruption. Also. stopping the CHKDSK at stage 1-3 have a high risk of losing files.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted.
