Windows 10: Chkdsk Taking forever Windows 10

I have read many other iterations of exactly what I'm about to ask and have yet to receive a satisfying answer.


I work for an IT Consultancy firm where we oversee thousands of independent systems. In the last two weeks, across the board regardless of disk size and machine age chkdsk has begun to take multiple hours. This process used to take about twenty minutes to complete on my own workstation and now every workstation under our purview is experiencing the exact same issue. The chkdsk utility makes it to about 10 - 15 % and then stops for HOURS. This is happening on hundreds of machines with no reports of bad hard drive activity. The chkdsk utility used to be part of our maintenance procedures to ensure the drives that bad sectors are detected on are thoroughly scanned. We, however, simply cannot use this utility any longer.


What changed? Why is it all of a sudden taking multiple hours on multiple systems when a week ago the same check on the same system would take roughly 20 min.

CHKDSK Taking Too Long

If you are patient enough, Chkdsk could eventually finish the scan and possibly repair some errors on your drive's file system.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Now I understand! I couldn't figure out what WinX was, like some old version of Windows?? But Win-X, made sense as 2 keys. I also get confused with all the "how to do" in this language. Step by step for us forever beginners. Thanks.
