  1. choose NetBIOS name of Windows 11 computer

I want to rename a few computers to Windows-testserver-1, Windows-testserver-2 etc. and know where to do that Advanced System settings but for Windows-testserver-1, it assigned a NetBIOS name automatically - Windows-testser first 15 characters of the computer name. When I try to rename the second computer to Windows-testserserver-2, then it says that a computer with that name already exists. The reason is that it wants to change its NetBIOS name to Windows-testser too, and that exists already in our domain indeed.Does anyone know a way of choosing your own NetBIOS name?

    :)

    NetBios names in Windows 11

I have a NAS named BlackArmor with IP address 192.168.4.150. My hosts and lmhosts files contain the mapping blackarmor = 192.168.4.150 and using lmhosts for NetBios names is enabled. Prior to the upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11, I could map folders on my NAS to drives using \\blackarmor\foldername. After the upgrade, if I use that reference I get an error message that the network name is no longer available, but if I use \\192.168.4.150\foldername, it works, and what is displayed for the drive mapping is \\blackarmor\foldername. Why can't the system find \\blackarmor when setting up the mapping, but display the name after the mapping is set up?

Yes. I was only suggesting that you to edit the LMHosts file rather than the Hosts file.

    NetBios names in Windows 11

Hi Trippap. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

Best would be to remap the NAS in WIndows 11 as shown here:

You might be able to sort it out following one of these:
