Windows 10: Chrome crashes Windows 10 - video error

My HP laptop crashes and restarts after I start Chrome - particularly when casting through chromecast.

It flashes off and on white screen then to the dreaded blue screen message:- "Your PC ran into a problem" - with stopcode "Video TDR Failure"

less frequently I get a "DPC WATCHDOG VIOLATION" This started after an u[date on windows 10 sometime last year.
