Chrome/Firefox not starting and Windows Update not working

    Hi,

Since this morning, I'm having some issues with Windows 10. Chrome wouldn't start and Firefox just displayed an error reporting window. I tried uninstall, reboot, reinstall for both. Didn't help.

I noticed there were a couple small updates available, as well as a feature update to 20H2, so I wanted to try updating Windows to see if this solves anything I'm currently on 2004. But trying to install the individual updates fails with error code 0x80070490 and the 20H2 feature update downloaded successfully before showing a message saying 'This PC can't be upgraded to Windows 10.' and that my hardware isn't ready for this version of Windows 10 I've got a 2019 laptop with a 9th gen intel cpu.

    I tried:

running the setup.exe from a fresh Windows install usb which showed the same message.

running the Windows Update troubleshooter no problems found.

running 'sfc/scannow' in an elevated command prompt 'Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.'.

    running 'DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth' 'Error: 1168'; 'Element not found.'.

Looking at my update history, one update successfully installed today maybe the cause of all this?: 'Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - v5.84 KB890830. Clicking 'uninstall updates' opens a control panel window with an empty list and 'No updates are installed on this computer.'

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Cedric

    :)

  2. Windows 10 - Chrome and firefox are not working

This helped me with Chrome but not with Firefox.

I opened Control Panel>Troubleshooting>Programs>Advanced, Run as Administrator and then went through the steps. My problem was the Chrome wouldn't start at all, so I went through the steps and it asks what program you're having problems with, I chose Google
Chrome, it'll go through a short diagnostic and then give you the option of Troubleshoot Program & then it gives a list of problems. I chose the first one: This program worked in earlier versions.... then click next, I clicked Windows 7, then next and it did
it's little fix. I tested and Chrome opened up just fine.

No such luck for Firefox, though.

Chrome and Firefox do not work in Windows 10 after an update

    Thanks for your response.

Here is what I faced and what I tried to resolve it.

    • When did the issue start? : A week before I got an update on Windows 10, after the update I am no longer able to use Firefox/Chrome.

    • Were there any changes made before the issue occurred? : I did not make any changes but looked up for suggestions over here and ran Windows Update Troubleshooter. Nothing came in those runs.

    • Have you tried updating your flash player? : No, I did not.

    • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far? : Answered above. The Troubleshooter did not resolve this issue. I have tried to reinstall both the browsers. Still nothing works.

Chrome/Firefox not starting and Windows Update not working

Google Chrome Overtakes Mozilla Firefox in Browser Market-share: StatCounter

That's why i started using chrome a while ago, i know there is always an extension to do something in Firefox, but at the end of the day i prefer it if the browser just happens to include these features.

There are other things that pushed me to chrome as well
    • Firefox 4-6 were full of bugs
    • The add-ons have to be updated manually in firefox
    • Google chrome will synchronise every single setting in the browser including the add-ons i have across all of my computers without a single add-on needed (to do the synchronisation of course, i still use them for other things)
    • Chrome works faster for me
    • Chrome has that brilliant start page
    • I could go on all day, there aren't any massive things Firefox is missing, it's all the small things it's missing that add up and make Google chrome better.
