  1. Chronic 100 percent disk and CPU usage on older hardware

Dual Boot install promised to roommate for New Year on an eMachine t5234 w/ 2gb RAM and Athlon Dual Core 400 CPU, finding heavy and CPU usage at 100% constantly. Some of this seems to trace to communications for Mail app syncing (he likes the new Mail app) and all the reporting going back to MS. I also see the Maintenance app regularly in the mix. Can any of these be turned off or mitigated besides uninstalling Mail App?

HD tests Good, Disk Check normal, boot defragged and optimized with Puran.

Here are Resource Monitor screenies and specs:

This PC runs WIn7 fine so I wonder if this may be due to all the reporting and maintenance running instead of pretty low specs. Opinions or suggestions?

    :)

    <snip>

In the Task Manager, under Performance tab, the disk utilization reaches to 100% due to which system became lagging and unresponsive. It started freezing in few moments and this keeps happening until disk usage reduces from 100%.

Control panel > Power Options > Edit Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > Processor Power Management > Maximum Processor state.

Also, once I start Chrome 64, it uses lots of cpu and ram to do absolutely nothing.

  5. This looks promising:

    and...
It's not clear if this needs to be occasionally repeated - if so, it is not a viable solution.

Mike has a valid point, the machine is meets minimum requirements, but that what you have.

Other than that - turn off live tiles, and do a clean boot. There's a lot of discussion about killing Windows Store, but I don't know if your roommate wants that app available.

SFC won't help with Win10 yet, but you might try an elevated command prompt:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  6. I'm not even sure I would load 10 on my 4-5 y.o. 3 gig ram laptop :/
But I suppose never say never we'll have to see just how good 10 turns out to be won't we so far I'm not impressed too much if I have to buy hack after hack to get a look I already have for free *Wink
    Cheers.

There's something terribly wrong for sure. Mine's a similar machine about the same age except Pentium D Duo. Same 2GBs RAM. The thing idols at about 0% to 10% CPU and almost 50% RAM. 8.1 is about the same. 7 was about 45% RAM. All run/ran great on this older Acer. In fact I pride myself keeping this older Acer going.

Does the CPU meet these requirements? PAE/NX/SSE2 Support Requirement Guide for Windows 8

    Does graphics handle DirectX 9?

Any maintenance shouldn't kick on until idol for around 5 to 10 minutes. I'll lock mine and returning see it chugging away at maintenance. By the time I sign in maintenance shuts down. 8, 8.1, and 10TP have an automatic maintenance unlike 7, although there is a scheduled maintenance task. However, it will check for updates and install during operation which will slow the system down a bit, but still operational.

Not totally sure, but I think reports are only to MS upon shutting down or reboot. I've seen no taxing on resources while using 10 in that way.

  9. Thanks, all. These trial installs/reinstalls/imaging to all of the older hardware at my various homes is the kind of practice that really helped learn about Win7 and now Win10. I feel like the past 48 hours have been a full grade of school.

Another TP install on one of the older PC's here Acer x1300 Slimline desktop w/3gb RAM Athlon 2x 7450 (2.4ghz) had the HD die midstream, so I swapped the eMachine HD into it and was surprised to see it start straightaway, doing some sort of adjustment (no observable driver-swapping) during "Getting PC ready" although the User account was intact and fully functional at Log On.

None of the thrashing or pegging occurred so I left it there and imaged it using Macrium to an older IDE drive I put into the eMachine. As soon as it started up it began pegging CPU and HD so I uninstalled the Mail app which was indicated several places as a solution, and it did calm it down considerably.

This seems to point to something about the eMachine, perhaps the lesser processor Athlon 64 X2 4000+ 2.1 GHz since the pegging happens even on a completely different IDE drive.

As a further indication of TP's favorability, my Uncle who loves his Win7 since beta has also not gone back to Win7 since he started using TP on another 7 year old Acer x1300 Slimline desktop. It runs fine.

  10. You never know but you might have better luck with the final release and all of the reporting is over and optional ?
One less service running but emachines in general are all cheap and if it lasted this long your buddy is lucky *Smile

  11. Saw some other reports re: AV software and application framework.

A few other head scratcher ideas (in no particular order)
    • uninstall all apps and only reinistall what you really need
    • stop syncing apps
    • verify your MS account
    • run wsreset.exe
    • turn off automatic app updates
    • download and run the app trouble shooter
You're absolutely right Greg, doing these test installs not only adds to your experience, it also let's you know the limits of the software/hardware.
    - hands on is a great education tool

I take stuff apart all the time to find out if I can put it back together and have it work again

I'm wondering about Windows Defender here. I've recently seen issues with it that I haven't seen since 8 came out.
Gotta wonder if there's a fault in the program that hasn't been discovered yet.
Several posters at EF complain of slowdowns due to it.

I'd like to see more reports if you don't mind.
First are the reports from the BSOD forum: BSOD - Posting Instructions I prefer option 2 from the EF collection link (which refers to SF) as it contains Application and System Event Viewer logs.

    I'd also like this one:
    - open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
    - expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
    - right click on Administrative Events
    - select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
    - save the file as Admin.evtx
    - zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
    - upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Finally, I'd like a copy of the perfmon report (perfmon /report) - but am having trouble making it work in Win10

It annoys me that both of these Hitachi HD's for the two roommates' Acer x1300 Slimlines died a week apart during maintenance. Can obsolescence be that planned? But they are attached to the slimline profile that fits neatly on a bookshelf and the kitchen bar.

I'm not signing in either using MS Accounts even though Uncle sync's his personal and work files via Skydrive on all PC's. I want to see how far we can go without having to tether MS accounts since I gave up in a few days and am happy signing in that way.

John, would you want these reports on the eMachine with the Mail app reinstalled which seemed to cause a lot of the thrashing?

Mike, original eMachines used quality parts and lasted 10 years as this one is doing. It was only when Acer bought them that they plunged them into the cheap bargain basement and sullied a good US brand name.

Thanks and Happy New Year, everyone!

Hi Greg! Reports should preferably be done under the conditions that are causing the thrashing. I wonder about the high CPU along with the high drive usage (only on 1 drive). Another thought is if the drive is starting to die - it may take longer to do things on it (and require more CPU) if it's double/triple checking everything that it does on the drive.
