Windows 10: Classifying Windows updates in common deployment tools

If you utilize automated update deployment tools, such as Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) or System Center Configuration Manager, you likely use automatic rules to streamline the approval and deployment of Windows updates. Using the correct update classification is, therefore, an important component of your organization’s device update process. For some industries, it can even be a requirement as, if properly configured, it will ensure that devices across your environment receive the most current update available.

Some Windows enterprise-level customers opt to take only security updates (aka the “B” release, or “Patch Tuesday”) to reduce the impact to their network, their personnel, and their devices. To accomplish this, they configure automatic rules to deliver only updates with a classification of “Security Update.”

But what if there is an issue with the security update itself? When this occurs, depending on the severity, we (the Windows Servicing & Delivery group) may choose to mitigate the issue through an additional security update or an out-of-band release—or we may choose to resolve the issue in the following month’s security update.

Unlike regularly scheduled monthly security updates, non-security and out-of-band updates are classified simply as “Update” in both WSUS and Configuration Manager. That means, if you are using auto-update rules set to receive updates classified as “Security Update” only, you will not receive a more recent update should one be produced and, thus, will miss the earliest opportunity to acquire a necessary fix for their environment.

So, what options are available for WSUS and Configuration Manager customers?

You can opt to configure your automatic rules to include updates classified as “Update” temporarily, or longer-term if preferred. Here are instructions for updating these rules:

You can opt to wait for the next security update, which will include all previous fixes.

Just released: Windows 10 Application Deployment tool

With the latest release of Windows 10 SDK Preview Build 10166, we are excited to introduce the Windows 10 Application Deployment (WinAppDeployCmd.exe) tool.

The Windows 10 Application Deployment (WinAppDeployCmd) is a command line utility that can be utilized to deploy a Universal Windows app from a Windows 10 PC to any Windows 10 mobile device. It allows users to deploy an .AppX to a device connected through USB or available on the same subnet without requiring access to the complete Visual Studio solution.

If you are developing an app on the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) and want to test it on a physical device (e.g. Microsoft Lumia 930), you can use WinAppDeployCmd.exe to deploy your app.

How do I get it?

WinAppDeployCmd is a stand-alone tool that is installed on your PC when you install the Windows 10 SDK. You can download the Windows 10 SDK preview (10166 or newer) from the Windows 10 Developer Tools page. This tool will also be in the RTM version of the Windows 10 SDK.

Tip: WinAppDeployCmd for Windows 10 does not require you to install Visual Studio 2015.

How do I get started?

To deploy an app to a device, you need to enable it for development. First, upgrade the to the latest Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10149 emulator released recently and follow these simple steps to prepare your device:

1. On the phone that you want to enable for development, go to Settings. Choose Update & security then select For developers.

2. Select Developer mode to enable side-load scenarios using WinAppDeployCmd.exe.

For more details, please read the MSDN topic Enable your device for development. Once you have successfully enabled the phone for development, follow the steps on the MSDN topic Windows 10 Application Deployment to get your apps on to the device.

Examples

WinAppDeployCmd is located at the following location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\bin\x86\WinAppDeployCmd.exe.

You can list all the available target devices on the network using:

WinAppDeployCmd devices

Or install a SampleApp.appx to a device using:

WinAppDeployCmd install -file “SampleApp.appx” -ip 192.168.0.1 -pin A1B2C3

To uninstall a previously-installed app from a device:

WinAppDeployCmd uninstall -package Company.SampleApp_1.0.0.1_x64 -ip 192.168.0.1

Or update a Windows app previously-installed on a device:

WinAppDeployCmd update -file “SampleApp_1.0.0.1.appx” -ip 192.168.0.1

Windows updates...

Oh. Your "Registry" must have gotten screwed up FLY3R. If for some reason you couldn't download your updates I suppose you could go to the update site, and run throught the steps 'till it fails activation. Then you could go up to "Tools > Manage Add ons > then disable "Windows Genuine Advatage Validation Tool." Of course you should only use this method if you are having problems updating your legitamate copy of Windows XP. Perhaps do to a corrupted piece of software? *Smile
