Clean Install - Nothing but problems

    Alphanumeric,
Thanks. It's encouraging to know that your Asus products work, despite no official support.
Strangely, despite Windows not downloading any product updates, Windows Update is now only taking a few seconds, rather than twenty minutes - I'll see if it lasts.
If nobody can suggest anything radical that's going to solve my problems, then perhaps I'll try another clean install.
I'll update with how it goes....

  2. You could try doing a Reset first. Reset Windows 10

    Alphanumeric,
I must just try the refresh - thanks.

Got this reply from Asus after making another enquiry:
"I'm afraid at this time we do not have any confirmation on whether or not this motherboard will in fact support Windows 10.

As even the driver support for Windows 8.1 is limited I would not be inclined into believing it will support Windows 10 any time soon.

    Best Regards,

    Paul"

p.s. Windows Update back to taking 20 minutes following a restart

Technically, I don't think there is a Refresh option in 10 like there is in 8.1. But yes, use the keep my files option.

Most OEM's write new drivers for currently in production hardware first. Then last years stuff etc. If your model motherboard has been out of production for a while, don't hold your breath waiting for new driver. My motherboards have very few if any Windows 8.1 drivers listed, let alone Windows 10 drivers. Windows 10 isn't even an option in the drop down OS selection menu on their support page. On the plus side, I don't actually need them. NVidia and AMD etc are submitting updated drivers directly to Microsoft for download via Windows update. The only hardware that's been a PITA for me is the VIA HD audio on my M468 motherboard. VIA released a new driver but it has issues, for me anyway. I'll never buy another product with VIA sound on it.

    Guys,

Thank you very much for all your help. I've finally solved the mystery of what was causing me so many problems.

I disconnected all other drives and had forgotten that I had an ASUS expansion card fitted to my mobo (U3S6 Expansion Card). It turns out that the expansion card was the cause of all my problems. Once disconnected from the mobo, Windows 10 installed in minutes and has been running smooth as silk since. It checks for updates in seconds and shuts down almost instantly.

I just need to work out now how I'm going to plug in my two DVD drives which were connected to the expansion card.

Thanks again for all your help (the fact that Alphanumeric had installed on older ASUS boards encouraged me to get to the bottom of the problems once and for all).

    Good result!!

Like others I was sceptical about the mobo drivers being the problem. My ASUS mobo is a few years old and has no problems. In my experience, win 10 does a good job of finding drivers all on its own.

Glad you found the problem. I have a W7 system with that same ASUS card on a ASUS M4A78T-E motherboard and was planning to upgrade to W10 in a few weeks.
I only use that card for the USB 3 ports so I will be removing it before I upgrade.

I bet you feel a lot better now that you got it working. So you ran out of SATA ports? Or are these drives IDE? You can get little adapter cards to plug into an IDE drive to convert it to a SATA interface. They won't run any faster but you can then connect them to your motherboards SATA ports. And ditch the IDE cables.

    Guys,
When I did the clean install I disconnected all unnecessary DVD drives and expansion cards etc.

I decided to reconnect my DVD drives today to two spare ports on the mobo but, when I started the computer I got a black screen with two strange symbols before Windows attempted to start. The computer just hangs on the black screen. I tried disconnecting the drives in turn, different SATA cables and even starting in safe mode but the result is the same - black screen with strange symbols immediately after POST.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Mark

You might try looking for the U3S6 Expansion Card firmware and driver.

Clean Install - Nothing but problems

No problem. I posted here originally because I thought the DVD drive problem was related (the DVD drives were running from the expansion card).
Now I'm wondering if perhaps the expansion card is ok but the drive/s were at fault? TBH I'm very reluctant to plug that expansion card in now in case it corrupts something.

    Thanks

If your system is running OK now then make an image of your system with Macrium Free and also make a USB rescue media so if something goes wrong you can restore your system in 15 min. I always have a current image available so I can go back if I screw something up.
