Windows 10: Clean install while keeping data and apps

1 I have some things I don't like with my installation of Windows 11 Pro things like: restore points not working, DISM not working, etc.2 I have tried a reinstall but the option to keep apps, data etc doesn't seem to work3 I have another SSD in my machine that I could use to do a new install Windows basically use as my C drive and believe I know how to install on that drive4 BUT the real issue are my apps and data ... it took me several days to set up this machine 6 months ago by installing my apps from scratch and I really don't want to do this ... although I could ...5 If I did a cl

Clean Install Workaround for Vista

You may remember this news story on techPowerUp! a couple of days ago relating to the lack of clean installs when using the Upgrade Editions of Vista, which required an old OS to be installed. However, Paul Thurrott has managed to find a workaround for this issue, which ironically lets users do a clean install Vista without any previous version of Windows, albeit a little tedious. Here are the steps:

• Boot from the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD as normal
• When prompted for a product code, leave this blank
• Select the version of Vista you have purchased and let Vista install
• When you boot to your desktop for the first time, run the Vista setup from Windows
• This time enter your product key
• When asked whether you want to do an Upgrade of Custom install, select custom and choose a clean install
• Windows will now install for a second time and you should be able to activate it

Remember, these steps are only advised for use in order to achieve a clean install of Vista, it is only legal to use the upgrade editions if you have previously purchased the appropriate version of Windows.

The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.

Windows 10 Install on a "dirty" Windows 7 - system.


If one has a Windows 7 system that has parasites (malware, etc.) and one is going to install Windows 10 while keeping data and apps:

1) It will be more efficient to:
- image the system (in case this was a bad idea)
- install Windows 10
- then look to see how things are.

2) It will be more conservative to:
- clean up Windows 7
- install Windows 10

Any idea if #1 might not only do the install but also clean things up? Any particular steps or methods suggested?
