    Clean install Windows 10 v1511


    Hi,

    My laptop currently has Windows 8.1. I don't have a coa sticker as windows key is embedded in bios.

    If I were to clean install Windows 10 v1511 will it activate automatically or will I have to upgrade first then activate and then clean install?

    Questions about build in Windows 10

    The only bit I can comment on is v1511. That is the latest significant build v1511 build 10586. With all current updates it will show as v1511 10586.122.

    Just as another comment you don't need to install Windows 8.1 then upgrade to Windows 10. With digital entitlement from your first upgrade you can just use Windows 10 install media to complete a clean install. When asked for a key use the option to Skip,
    Do this later or I do not have a key. As long as you have upgraded from Windows 8.1 pro previously you will b able to clean install Windows 10 Pro.

    Thank you for the reply. I have Windows 10 pro installed and working but not well. The "update" wants to install the home edition?? It fails every time.

    I can do a clean install of Windows 10 pro v1511 and it activates. I cannot do an install and keep files with ether home or pro as it says; "You can't keep Windows settings, ..., because you're installing an edition of Windows that's different...".

    Windows update to v1511 worked successfully on two other PC I have.

    Yep - That's the right way. *Smile Why? One of the major new features in version 1511 is the ability to read Windows 8 product keys stored in bios. If the end goal is a clean install, then just start with the clean install of Windows 10, version 1511. It will detect the Windows 8 product key stored in bios, automatically pick the correct version to install (home v. pro) and activate itself. If you want to know what the product key is that is stored in Bios and what version of Windows 8 it is for, run showkeyplus from this forum:

    *Ditto Build 10586 will read an use Windows 8/8.1 OEM embedded keys automatically. No need to upgrade first. You can clean install and it will use the embedded key and activate with it.
