  1. Click n run Office365 => retail OEM 2016 wu error

    Hello,

After changing under Win10 from click and run Office 365 to OEM retail Office 2016 WU still tries to update the Office product and it fails. Office retail updates via Office itself and its OK (updated), but its still trying to update via WU and those fails. Have the WU updates hidden with WU hide remove tool and it helps, otherwise got error all the time on the updates. Have to hide the WU Office updates every month.
I don't know why W10 tries to update both products, have only OEM retail 2016 left. Office updates go through Office=>account=>office updates=>update now option. Any ideas how to get rid of the annoying WU updates for another product than the one installed.

    :)

Please help the experts here in their quest to resolve the Failed/Missing Icons problem - Win10

    Here's my first:

New HP (OEM) laptop / Processor - AMD A10-8700P Quad-core 1.8 GHz 2 MB cache / Graphics card AMD Radeon Memory / RAM 8 GB / IE11 / Norton IS.

Crashed BSOD when installing Office365 2016 - otherwise no problems until the latest WUs screwed it up. Now trying to provide info using Narrator

  3. How can you tell if Windows 10 is OEM or retail?

Well Windows 8.1 and earlier versions, you can determine if its OEM or Retail easily.

    Click Start then type: CMD

    Right click CMD

    Click Run as administrator

At the command prompt type: slmgr.vbs /dlv

    Hit Enter

This will indicate the channel, retail or OEM.

Did you uninstall Office365 and change the installation tally in your Office365 account?

If not, Office365 might still be trying to update you directly though remnants of the original Office installation using your MSAccount login as an identifier. [It is the outright-purchase Office 2016 that is updated through WU].

  5. I'm not quite sure what you mean, Im not using the same MS account on Office 2016 and 365. These are not volume licenses, only retail 1 OEM plus 365 its for 3 pc's, if remember correctly, been used on 1. Uninstalled everything and don't use the same MS account so don't know why it updates via 2 channels? WU and via Office itself.

If you did uninstall Office365 & checked that your 365 account recorded that correctly then I do not know why you are getting this problem. Perhaps you can get some help in Office - Microsoft Community

  7. Thank you for your suggestions/info.

Yeah, I tried with MS but they don't understand the problem. Just want to uninstall + basic things, did not get any better. Their support is too "low" for this kind of problem. They have better support but its not that easy to get, have to reserve a time etc etc. As a company representative it would be easier to get proper support. Still can live with this, hide all updates that causes problems (Office), and still get needed updates to Office. I suppose a clean installation of Windows would fix this. Some things are messed up somewhere. Maybe the 365 uninstall did not work 100 % as it should. Maybe I'll do a Win10 clean installation within few months.

EDIT: I'm closing the topic, if you still have something to add, please reopen the ticket.

The link is to a user-to-user mutual support forum not to MS itself. I use those forums regularly and there are several very competent users contributing to them.

The only thing you need to beware of is any response from somebody with a Microsoft badge under their name.
    • Whilst there are occasional exceptions, most of them are database operators with no skills of their own so their posts are almost invariably both useless & irrelevant.
    • You can generally recognise their posts because they contain [as you wrote above] standard procedures that demonstrate no appreciation of the problem you are writing about.
    • They just seem to copy your post into a database and reply with whatever comes out.
    • If you reported that Office failed because an elephant had sat on your computer you might well get directions to the zoo.

By the way, I also uninstalled Office365 a while ago then installed a version that I had bought outright. I have not experienced any of the problems you have so it might well be some remnant tucked away somewhere that is causing your problem. I have checked through my own notes and have found this
Uninstall Office 2016, Office 2013, or Office 365 from a PC - Office Support It has a link to instructions for manually checking that the uninstall is complete but I have never had to use it so I do not know how useful it is.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

  10. I tried above and it partially helped. Office installed all updates without error, but WU is still going through the updates but without updating not needed (some cycles), I don't know why it rolls through them. After that WU is up to date as it should be. Any thoughts?

"Office installed all updates without error" - Office shouldn't be doing any updating. It should be leaving it to WU.

Can you check that you do not have Click-to-run [CTR]? I do not see how you could be. Do you have the update section shown below - File menu, Office account? It should not be there.

These two links very neatly explain that everything I have been saying is complete rubbish.Install Office updates - Office Support
Update Office with Microsoft Update - Microsoft Office
    • All versions of Office 2016 now, it seems, update independently of Windows update unless Group Policy has been used to suppress this function within Office.
    • I had been following discussions of this issue very closely during Office 2016's Preview period but it now seems that the situation changed radically in its final release yet I did not notice.

This article describes the Registry key involved in disabling automatic Office CTR updating - Automatic updating for Office 2013 and Office 2016 Click-to-Run is not enabled whilst this article seems to say [right at the end] that you can just as well disable them through the UI [as illustrated in my earlier post] - How to revert to an earlier version of Office 2013 or Office 2016 Click-to-Run

    • There is further clarification in Office 2016 Click-To-Run Service - Is it necessary [see all Rohn007 posts]. I have been seeing highly competent advice from Rohn007 for several years in that forum so I believe that his conclusions about CTR are valid - that CTR can be disabled without penalty other than the necessity of running updates another way.
    • He did not check whether Windows update then carried out updating correctly for Office 2016 once CTR was disabled.
    • The other MS products checkbox would need to be set in Settings, Update, Advanced options.
    • The fact that they are all listed in the Microsoft update catalog makes me think that WU will do it correctly but I have no means of checking that - Microsoft Update Catalog - Office 2016 updates {I ditched Office 2016 earlier this year}.
    • The posts by PABear, another competent contributor, makes me doubt that WU takes over the job but the thread is somewhat ambiguous leading up to his statement - Windows 10 Pro and Office 2016 Updates
    • This thread explains that another step is needed after setting the other MS products checkbox - Office 2016 not receiving updates - but I think that only applies to volume licences
    • In another rather dated thread, another highly competent contributor [Sumit Dhiman] explains & posts screenshot that demonstrates that WU does handle Office updates even though it spawns a separate dialog whilst doing so - Why the updates for Office 2016 not offered through windows update
    • In this recent thread, an OP reported that the firewall was blocking CTR yet Office updated anyway. This leads me to think that WU must have taken over the job. - Office 2016 list of updates location You might notice the warning by Palcouk, another highly competent contributor, that each Office update is large because it is in essence a complete replacement not merely a delta.
    • This OP reported that WU definitely has not been updating Office 2016 - Office 2016 updates - WU does not update Office 2016

  14. I have that update section in Office 2016?! Is that reserved for which Office version?
Unchecked the box in WU settings, give updates to other MS products. lets see how it goes with that. Most important part that I receive the updates and don't get errors in WU.

About "Is that reserved for which Office version?" - sorry, I do not understand what you are asking.
    • It was introduced with Office 2010 or 2013 and manages updates for the version of Office in which it exists.
    • I do not know how it copes with multiple Office versions being installed but I would guess it does not even know they are there.
    • You could try searching that msanswers forum for any explanations there or you would look in the links I gave you in my large post [whilst it was not what I was looking for at the time, I think the link to posts by Rohn007 mentioned this topic].
