Clicking, stuttering sound after upgrade to Windows 10 - High latency

    Hello!

At first everything seemed fine. Everything was working, I only needed to upgrade the VGA driver.
I have a xonar D1 card with uni-xonar which worked immediately.

Than when I listened to music I noticed clicking and stuttering which got really horrible after while.

Talked about it on hydrogenaudio: Clicking, stuttering after upgrade to Windows 10 - Hydrogenaudio Forums

I clean installed VGA, updated the LAN driver, re-installed xonar. Things improved but they still suck. Clicking is still a regular occurance.

I checked latency when LAN and the soundcard was disabled but latency still sucked:

Since I was using the very same hardware for years without these issues and I have doubts that several hardware or their drivers suddenly started misbehaving I'm guessing it might be an issue in win10 itself.

I attached the latest measurements. (screenshots and report) The worst values still belong to the same as the first time: VGA, soundcard, LAN, USB, ntoskernel

Don't know what else to do.

    :)

  2. Extremely high DPC Latency from Directx Graphics Kernel since Anniversary Update.

Thanks for writing. In addition to your observation, I did clean Windows install and added drivers one by one.

When I installed my AMD Graphics driver...bingo problem is back with stuttering audio and high DPC latency ranges from 1500 to 2500 and sometimes very high. I used AMD Clean Up utility and problem was gone.

So, this Anniversary Update is not friendly with my AMD graphics drivers(especially SOund).

At moment I am stuck, but surely will look for a solution lately.

    Windows 10 Stuttering Sound/Video

    Hey everyone,

Just recently switched over to 10 and have been having some troubles with my sound and Youtube videos. There's a slight stutter/skip in the audio sometimes when I'm playing music from iTunes or on soundcloud or youtube. Sometimes it's extremely noticeable
and makes the music almost unbearable and other times it almost seems it disappears. When it's stuttering, it does it on my studio monitor speaker and headphones, so I think it's something with the computer and not the external devices.

Computer: HP Pavilion DV6 with Beats Audio, originally ran Windows 7 until recent upgrade.

I've tried checking for updates for my two audio drivers (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC and Intel(R) Display Audio) under Sound, video and game controllers on Device manager. Windows auto search update says they're up to date. Drivers under Audio inputs
and outputs also up to date according to Window's auto search.

i've also tried updating the IDT HD Audio CODEC via "Let me choose a device for my computer" and selecting "High Definition Audio Device." After doing this, the stutter didn't change. I then tried reinstalling this IDT HD Audio Codec by uninstalling it and
letting windows re-install it after a power down.

I've used HP Update tool and it says everything's up to date. Never again buying HP. this DV6, this thing sounds like a jet engine with one web browser open yet i got a quad core to be able to handle multitasking :/

EDIT: I turned off my WiFi for 20 minutes and it seemed to stop stuttering playing iTunes while offline. This has me curious as I've never had latency or bandwidth issues but could that be a factor? Just tested at speedtest.net (for what's it worth) and
returned 60ms ping 17Mbps down 6.5 up and this is lower than usual..I turned WiFi back on and it almost instantly started stuttering again while using chrome. chrome is up to date.

Are there any other recommendations? Appreciate any help in advance.

The latency-problem is usually caused by the latest Intel network driver. There are countless threads about this and easily google-able. There is no real help, Intel is promising to "look into it" for over a year now and still no fix.
I changed to Realtek NIC because of that - best €10 I ever bought for the computer, to have no problems.

Can't be the problem because I have a realtek network adapter on my motherboard.

My best guess is at this point that Microsoft screwed up the audio stack or the the API for the drivers which cause high latency.

Ah okay. My problem has always only been the Intel NIC. I actually have an external USB device, Focusrite Forte, for music, and it also has audio latency problems if I use the newest Intel NIC driver. There is an older one, I have it saved here, which doesn't cause the problem.

I think I ran out of anything I can think of. I even tried crappy driver updaters. The only thing I can conclude is that win10 sucks and microsoft really screwed up something.

Clicking, stuttering sound after upgrade to Windows 10 - High latency

Same issue here. Had DPC latency spikes and the corresponding video & audio stutter every 30 minutes or so since I first installed Windows 10. After two reinstalls and only installing the necessary software to play my audio files (that worked in Win7 and 8.1 without ever having this problem), and also updating my Realtek network drivers twice (last time today), the problem is still here.

I have no idea what Microsoft is doing. There are so many reports on this problem all over the internet, but they don’t seem to care.

30 minutes? How do you even notice that? *Smile Here it stuttered constantly when things got bad. Or do you mean it starts stuttering after 30 minutes?

Anyway my only solution was downgrading to 8.1. Just makes sure you keep the recovery files so you can downgrade to it, and downgrade while you can.

Well, when I listen to music for a couple of hours (my PC is my audio source), it’s quite easy to tell when stutter from DPC latency happens. I started taking notes of when these happened, and they are always 25-35 minutes apart from each other.

Yeah, I have a dual-boot with 10 and 8.1 now too, but, call me mad, I still have some hope that Microsoft fixes severe bugs / issues in their current product.

Roll back your Realtek nic driver to the Win10 upgrade version, then in your audio properties, disable enhancements. I messed with this for months, was the only way I found that works consistantly.

    Hi!

I don't know to whom you're addressing this comment, but I (thread starter) use an Asus Xonar D1, which I mentioned.

On a different note: Was there seriously no improvement in this regard in the past half year since W10 came out...

Clicking, stuttering sound after upgrade to Windows 10 - High latency

I skimmed a bit too much, I see. I was hoping to help someone from the frustration I've had. Win10 is great -except when it isn't. In the case of my onboard Realtek NIC and audio... well, a definite case of it not being great.

At first they both -kinda- worked, just not well together. If I was utilizing the nic, the audio crackled. I eventually stumbled into the audio enhancements.. when I disabled them all seemed well. The network i/o was well below what it should be, but a better trade off for crackling audio.

Then came the Realtek Win10 NIC driver. Fixed the network i/o but the crackling was worse than ever. I found no way to resolve this. Back in the XP days I would have immediately suspected an IRQ conflict, but nowadays we can't even check that.

I rolled back my NIC driver, and am living with it for now.

    MY SOLUTION:

I can confirm that changing the Default Format option alleviated the issue in my case but has not solved it completely. I'm using Windows 8.1, Realtek onboard sound and drivers. It appears that setting the highest available format quality results in least frequent stuttering, however in my case, at the below cited selected format, the stuttering is still present at times.

Go: Control Panel > Sound > Playback > Speakers (or your preferred sound output device) > Properties > Advanced > Here change Default Format to: 24 bit 192000 Hz (Studio Quality) > Click Apply

New information: Choosing a lower quality Default Format - 16 bit 48000 Hz (DVD Quality) has solved the issue completely. If you are an audiophile or get a compulsive nagging sense of unease when you feel things aren't perfect, this solution might not be for you. I however am enjoying it.

I think W10 is the new Vista: Eternally buggy, which I'll never use.
