I'm getting the CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT on a new build and all I am simply trying to do is run the major Win 10 update through Windows 10 Update assistant as the copy of Win 10 I have is the original from when it was first released. My screen will freeze up and then I will get the BSOD with the message. All help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    :)

    Hello Nevarran,

If you are over-clocking anything, reset to default as this could risk your system and cause such issues.

Check and ensure your CPU temperature is within standard and nothing's overheating.

Clear your CMOS (or load optimized BIOS defaults) to ensure there's no improper BIOS setting. Make sure to have the latest BIOS on motherboard and/or chipset drivers.

Just in case you're using Asus AI suite, uninstall it -- as this could cause software issue apart from the driver issue.

If you've checked everything mentioned above, and still getting the same issue, check for faulty hardware as this is normally a hardware error.

Let us know if you have questions.

    Regards.

Actually, I was able to complete the update (5 reboots later LOL) as the Update assistant remembered its place after every reboot. Seemed the more updates that got installed the longer it went before it froze. After I got it completely to 1703 the freezing stopped altogether. So what is it? Is it that my PC is too new for that old version of Windows 10? Seems odd since win 10 is only a couple of years old. It was freaking me out as I was thinking something was wrong with my MB or RAM. Very odd and scary BSOD.

Given that Ryzen motherboards and processors were released in 2017, and the hal.dll (hardware abstraction layer) that you were using came out in 2015, it was likely a compatibility issue.

You will likely want to reinstall your chipset drivers after the upgrade, I saw that you were missing some chipset drivers in the logs you posted earlier.

Yes, I have installed them now, thank you! I was trying to get Windows up to date before attempting to install anything else but point well taken. Next time I will do the essentials hardware drivers first. I did obtain a 1703 copy of Win 10 and burned it to a USB stick in case I have to reload (when I have to, lol). Thank you for confirming my new hardware is not busted! *Smile

  10. Thanks for this! I was having the very same problem with an old Win 10 download on a spanking new Ryzen 5 1600 build. Kept locking up, crashing and restarting. Was it my mouse? Keyboard? CPU? RAM? Graphic card? MB? Overheating? Nope, none of those apparently. Downloaded a new version of Win 10, installed it and is now running sweet as a nut!*Biggrin
