    Clone not working

Did a clean install onto a 120GB SSD and then have cloned the disk to a 250GB one using Macrium. Now I have a little problem and I don't know just what to do - the clone disk goes into a "self repair" loop ending up with the same result that it cannot be fixed. Is there any fixes that I can try or have I got to re install onto that 250GB disk all over again. If I have to do that then I shall just whack in a 500GB SSD but I would rather get it fixed first.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    :)

  2. CLONE, CLONE, CLONE !

    Hello everybody,

Before upgrading, clone your system disk !

I read too many posts from people having upgraded and who cannot rollback with the W10 rollback function.

    If only they haved cloned...

Two solutions are better than one.

What hard drive clone software works with Windows 10

I use AOMEI Backupper free version. It can help you to
    clone seagate hard drive
. And it works fine on Windows 10/8/7.

    hope it works for you.

Ok Steve I have only one disk in the machine (Asus G750JM ROG) at any one time because the second port is not being picked up so I do the clone with one of those USB to SATA adaptors.
The ACHI the machine has EUFI and given what I mentioned about the above I guess I can leave that?
In any case I will try the clone in safe mode and reading that safe mode tut I was getting those options last night but the troubleshoot just seemed to try and repair - but I wasn't in safe mode if that makes any difference?

Still if things go south still I shall just do another clean install as I have my programs and the WLAN driver on a stick and the install seems to be a fair bit faster process that the 7 install and I shall do it to a 500GB drive instead because I was intending to clone to a 250GB drive until I got a bit full then go larger but I suppose cloning could possibly be the problem with corrupting the initial install?

Instead of cloning. I would suggest to use Macrium to create a backup image to an external HD, verify it then restore it to your new SSD. Always work for me.

NOTE: Cloning is bad and sometimes you'd get disk signature collition (Both disks are having the same signature)

Yep well I couldn't even get into safe mode in any form and te machine just cycles back to Attempting repairs. So I have bitten the bullet put the 500GB in and am installing as I type I just hope the new code they sent me works.

But I will do an immediate backup image as I guess you are right about the cloning it hasn't always worked out in the past either but more often than not has been good.

Thanks to you both for the advice*Smile

    Clone not working

Thanks helpboot I might try them next time as I am half way through the updates on a new install.

The bit that is bothering me now is that Showkey is showing a Home version whereas the original install was activated to Pro using the 7 Pro key anyway will recheck that when the dust settles.

Just an update I find now that they have left me with the Home version instead of the Pro I had on the smaller drive. I used the activation code they sent back the first time but no go. I have been on the line with their support people who wanted to charge me $150+ to do a one time fix and so on and so on.

I might try cloning again or another reinstall as they said my registry was corrupt and I don't see how on earth it could be as I have only just installed the OS. They did run an SFC which showed no violations but then showed me a load of the event viewer with the errors circled but I don't knw what they mean. The system is working ok but I am really disappointed in Microsoft and the fact one cannot get any real person to person support.

    Any ideas folks please??

John, are you sure you were talking to MS Support? I've never heard of them charging for this install, plus the errors in event viewer is what all the scammers use to get access to your machine. There isn't a machine that does not show errors in event viewer.

You are going to have great difficulty booting from a USB. Also, @topgundcp is correct. a Clone will copy the disk signature and you cannot have 2 disks with the same signature in a UEFI Install. That was why I had told you to disconnect the original disk to boot thee clone. I'm sure you will have to install the drive for it to work. I did it that way once and had to boot into safe mode before it started working. I usually just restore an image.

What about running bcdboot to fix the disk signature issue? Or are there other tools that can fix that issue? (I'm sort of a newbie on these topics.)

  12. ICIT2LOL Win User
Yep Steve I only have one disk in the machine as the second SATA port doesn't show up if I connect a disk there so there was no disks but the one being installed onto in the machine. The ISO I burnt it at a very slow speed -1x if I remember rightly to make sure t was copied as best one can so could it still be something wrong with it yet the first install went ok. *Confused

Well I phoned the Microsoft support number and it gave me a LogMeIn link which I have seen before and to cut a long story short they ran a sfc which showed no violations and the charge as I mentioned dropped from $150+tax to $30+ tax and needless to say I refused that all.

The event viewer yes mate I know there are always tons of errors and stuff like that and she circled them to show me but you might as well show me spots on the moon!

What I don't get is why did the first install go ok with Pro using my 7 Pro key and not this install? I tried using the key they gave me via Showkey and also the 7 Pro key which of course was rejected so it is gone!! That in itself is enough to really pee me off as I paid for the Pro key and I should get it regardless of how many times I re install it.

    Clone not working

What if the OP had cloned only the Windows partition and not the entire disk?

When you clone, you clone the whole thing, bit by bit, sector by sector so they both look identical. What you said is to copy, not clone.

Am actually with Microsoft support now and a techie who has assured me he is a Microsoft tech and I will not be charged any money and I saw him go to an upgrade which it did before with the first install after entering my 7 Pro key and am waiting the outcome of the upgrade to complete.

I do hope this will be the last of it but it looks to be going to be a long wait as it says 100% complete but nothing is happening.

Well I think the problem has been fixed the activation is now showing Pro and it was an upgrade from M$ that was missing. So the techie is going to call me back tomorrow to see if everything is good - fingers crossed.
