    Sometimes the install will boot in the new PC, and sometimes it will not. With Windows 7, I used to install a third party SATA card in the original machine and install the drivers before the transfer. Then, I'd install the drive and the SATA card in the new machine and boot with the drive connected to the SATA card. Windows would boot and I would update the drivers as needed, and then shut down the machine and remove the SATA card. I am not sure if this will work with Windows 10 or not.

    Before the free upgrade ended last summer, I installed a hard drive with a temporary copy of a Windows 10 installation (for an EVGA board) into a Dell Studio 540s. It booted and the drivers loaded, but it was not activated. I entered a Windows 8 Pro upgrade key and it was accepted and the copy activated. Today, with the upgrade offer over, I'd do what you did, and contact Microsoft technical support for a new key.
