Windows 10: Cloned hdd windows 10 to ssd , it works fine for weeks till i delete old drive

Hi all , I cloned my hdd windows 10 to nvme ssd with acronis that comes with Kingston ssd. After cloning , I changed boot sequence to boot from ssd and it works like magic, much faster. So I used it for weeks till last night I decided I want more storage so I formatted the old drive and now windows doesn’t boot. I tried to boot from windows recovery usb. And performed start up repair - couldn’t repair your PC System restore - to use system restore you must specify which windows installation to restore I also physically removed the old drive and tried to perform system repair again. Cloned OS to SSD want to delete old OS on hdd

Not sure if this was answered(cant find 1) but recently cloned windows 10 from HDD to SSD. My HDD was setup as GPT and the partition was setup with the OS as almost the full 1tb size. I had and currently have alot of used space that i dont wanna lose if
it can be avoided. The whole cloning process was a pain having to move stuff to the ssd then partition the empty space on hdd the move stuff to the new partition until I had less than 200g with the OS still there so I can clone it onto ssd after cleaning
it. Os works fine(windows loads sooo much faster) old hdd works fine but wanna get rid of the old os on hdd without deleting anything else? Sorry so long and sadly I merged the partitions back to 1.

 

Moving to SSD. Clone or not to clone?

Part of how I keep my SSD fast is to clone it to a platter drive, then clone back. You just want to make sure that you are only cloning teh used space, and not the empty space.


So, again, I isntall Windows to the ssd. Clone to platter drive, then clone back.

I am not sure why, but if I do not do the clone step, the drive's speed, and windows booting, decreases substantially within a week or so.

I am using a Corsair F60 SSD and a Western Digital 500AAKS as drives, and using the free version of Acronis that WD provides, if any of that matters. I am not sure, at this point.

 

Cloned OS to SSD want to delete old OS on hdd

If you used a program to clone the HDD to the SSD you should not have moved stuff to the SSD as the cloning should have done all the moving.

If you are back to the HDD this is where you should have had the partitions setup. 1TB for the OS is too big. Most of your data like Photos should be in a separate drive. You should have a C:\ drive with Windows 10 and your programs and apps on it. Other
data should be placed on other drives.

A:\ and B:\ are usually reserved for Floppy disks even though you may not have any. D:\ is usually the CD/DVD drive. E:\ and others are used as data drives or other disks like a backup disk.
