Windows 10: Code 31 persists after clean install of manufacturer vga driver

I recently had to reinstall windows on my computer, which was a full clean install.Once this was done, I ran updates, installed laptop drivers, etc., and all seemed well. I proceeded to play a game... which then had graphics glitches and froze. The game does not appear to be the problem, the sound still works, and I was able to play for varying amounts of time with no similarities in activity causing the freeze.I decided to check the install, drivers, and so forth - and there it is: Windows Basic Display Adapter driver, error 31.I uninstalled, and rebooted. No fix.I noticed the Intel VGA drive

Clean Install Workaround for Vista

You may remember this news story on techPowerUp! a couple of days ago relating to the lack of clean installs when using the Upgrade Editions of Vista, which required an old OS to be installed. However, Paul Thurrott has managed to find a workaround for this issue, which ironically lets users do a clean install Vista without any previous version of Windows, albeit a little tedious. Here are the steps:

• Boot from the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD as normal
• When prompted for a product code, leave this blank
• Select the version of Vista you have purchased and let Vista install
• When you boot to your desktop for the first time, run the Vista setup from Windows
• This time enter your product key
• When asked whether you want to do an Upgrade of Custom install, select custom and choose a clean install
• Windows will now install for a second time and you should be able to activate it

Remember, these steps are only advised for use in order to achieve a clean install of Vista, it is only legal to use the upgrade editions if you have previously purchased the appropriate version of Windows.

Do let us know the following to assist you better:

• How have you upgraded to Windows 10 (Previous operating system/ ISO file/ Pre-installed)?
• How have you installed the drivers on your device (From Device Manager/ Manufacturer's website)?

As the error code 31 says: This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device, you will have to update the drivers.

If you have not installed from the manufacturer's website, search for the latest drivers and try to install them.

You can install Windows 8/8.1 drivers in compatibility mode if there are no Windows 10 compatible drivers.

Follow the steps to install in Compatibility mode:

  Download the updated driver from the manufacturer’s website.
  
• 
  Right click the driver installation file and select
  Properties then tap or click the Compatibility tab.
  
• 
  Place a check in the Run this program in compatibility mode for: box.
  
• 
  Tap the drop down box and select a previous operating system, then tap or click
  OK.
  
• 
  Try installing the driver and check.

USB code 31. Is it possible to uninstall driver completely and reinstall?

I would appreciate if you can provide us the following information to help us understand the issue better.

• What is the make and model of the computer?
• Did you make any changes in prior to this issue?

I would like to inform you that this issue might be caused due to the non-compatibility of drivers. I would suggest you to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check.

Follow these steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if that helps.

a. Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website.

b. Right-click on the driver setup file and click on
‘properties’.

c. Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box
‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 8 operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.
