    color coding files

    Hi Shelly

I am sorry, it is not possible to color code files in Windows 10, files will just have the icon for the application associated with that file ...

There are free utilities available online like FileMarker.net which can be used to color code files and folders . . .

  3. Color Coding the File Names

For those of us who work on large projects that contain hundreds of files, it would be really helpful if we could just color code the file names. This could be done in File Explorer and would be reflected throughout Office and other apps.

    Use Cases:

    • If there were a team sharing a directory of files, but there was a lead person in charge of each file, the file names could be color codded with a different color for each person.
    • I use a distinct color for the files that have to be edited or fixed as opposed to the many others which are in black.
    • There is a project where there is a requirement for keeping a record of all stages of the work as it goes through various stages. For example, a manual is being produced in Word or Publisher. There might be several drafts of the text and/or chapters or
sections are continuously added. Now we add a date to the file name (sometimes we use a version number), but soon we end up with dozens of files and have to look for the most current one. Mistakes are easily made. If we could just have the current file
in a distinct color, time would be saved, as well as mistakes reduced. This is especially needed for Government Work where often it is a legal requirement, but it also ios useful when we may want to roll back to a previous version.
    • In an extension of the previous case, we are creating a curriculum consisting of 17 different on line courses. Each course has a history of many file versions. But there is one current file for each. We want to keep all the files in one directory because
we are always cutting and pasting from one to another and changing a term in all, etc. If the current version file were in a distinct color that would be helpful.
    • If there were various stages a file went through such as draft, draft submitted for approval, draft approval, draft disapproved, sent to copy editor, copy edited, etc, we could use the color coding for simple project management without using other software.
    • Programmers could do the same for versions of their code regarding testing stages or approvals and supervisors who are not technically sophisticated, just by scanning the director can get a good idea of the status of things.
I'm sure there are many others and I would welcome additional ideas.

Once color coding of file names is possible, the next steps could be another sorting option for directories (by color). then there could be a table of color meanings and perhaps a tie in with the existing color coding in outlook.

I have used Windows from the first Beta version to Windows 10, and in all that time there has only been one improvement and that was allowing longer file names which was a big one. However, with everything else improving the file listing process has remained
the same. It certainly was good, but everything can be made better.

?? How do I PW protect Folders in windows

    hmmm?
Sharing files and folders overview You can share the files and folders stored on your computer, on a network, and on the Web. The method you choose depends on whom you want to share files with, and what computer they will use to access the files.

When you share files or folders, they are not as protected as they are when you do not share them. People with access to your computer or your network might be able to read, copy, or change files that are in a shared folder. You should always be aware that the files and folders that you share are available to other people and be sure to monitor your shared files and folders on a regular basis.

    Important

If your computer is not joined to a domain, you can use the Network Setup Wizard to automatically turn file and printer sharing on or off. To start the Network Setup Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Setup Wizard.
If you both use the same computer

You can put the files you want to share in the Shared Documents folder. Files stored in the Shared Documents folder or its subfolders are always available to other users on your computer.

    Step-by-step procedure
    Note

If you are connected to a network domain, the Shared Documents, Shared Pictures, and Shared Music folders are not available.
If both computers are on the same network

You can share a folder or drive on your computer with others on the network. You can also control whether the files in the shared folder can be modified by other users.

If your computer is connected to a network domain, use this procedure:

    Step-by-step procedure
If your computer is connected to a workgroup, use this procedure:

    Step-by-step procedure
    Note

If you are connected to a network domain, you will need to set the Access control for the folder or drive after sharing it. For more information, go to To set, view, change, or remove file and folder permissions.
If you want to share your files online

You can publish pictures and documents on the Web using the Web Publishing Wizard. The files will be stored in a private, online folder that you manage.

    Step-by-step procedure

If you don't want others to access your files

You can prevent other users from accessing your folders and the files they contain. When your computer is connected to a domain, this is called setting permissions for your file or folder. When your computer is connected to a workgroup, this is called making your folders private.

If your computer is connected to a network domain, use this procedure:
