Windows 10: COM Surrogate Too High CPU Usage Because of Windows Search

I noticed my laptop fans become louder and I checked the task manager to find out the COM Surrogate taking 15.5+% of CPU usage. There is another problem as well, my pictures and video thumbnails are not showing, I already checked the show thumbnail instead of icons, I already delete the thumbnail from drive C to reset it, but it still doesn't show all the thumbnails, only few of them have thumbnails. When I did refresh, all of the file's thumbnail or icons becomes white and then the explorer error. It says "working on it" for a long time. I used process explorer to check what is causing COM Su

Thank you for suggesting these troubleshooting steps. Unfortunately, starting in a Clean Boot did not resolve the issue. I remember that there were some updates available prior to this issue (KB3156421 and KB3152599) and I didn't do any major changes to
the system.

One thing that I forgot to mention in my first post, is that the high CPU usage also sometimes occurs with the "Host Process for Windows Tasks" process too. It mostly happens with COM Surrogate, but this process shows up sometimes too.

COM Surrogate high CPU usage

Hello

I saw many posts for COM surrogate using high CPU but never a case like mine.

Whenever i click end task,it restarts the process but it keeps it low (under 2% CPU)

Then every time i start Windows Media Player,both files go over 25-30% so i end up having COM and Windows Media player using 50-60% of my CPU

How can i fix this ?

Usually, too many background processes can boost your CPU usage. Since you already disabled the apps that are not necessary on startup,
we suggest checking the applications running once you have successfully boot Windows 10. To do this, simply follow the steps below:

• Click on the Start button and type Task Manager on the search box.
• On the Task Manager window, you should see the programs running.
• Click on the More details drop-down button to see the total number of apps running and their real-time CPU usage.

From there, you should see what applications are running on high CPU usage. You can also
restart the Windows Management Instrumentation service and see if your CPU performance will improve. Follow the instructions below to restart the service:

• Click on the Start button and type Services.
• Scroll down the list and look for Windows Management Instrumentation.
• Right click on it and select Restart.
