Windows 10: Comm Port Assignment from a USB connection on Windows 10

Calibration of a weather Visibility sensor requires use of USB connection at the sensor and Laptop. The sensor manufacturer first requires a download of FTDI Chip Set on to the Laptop and then a terminal emulator such as Tera Term or Procomm. The Device Manager is used to identify the USB port to a Comm port assignment for the terminal emulator. This process is working on my Windows 7 laptop, but not on the Windows 10 laptop. What is missing on the Windows 10 laptop ? Is it a driver ? If so how do I get it installed ?

Legacy equipment using COMM port

Many of my customers now use a USB Gear to enable use with USB converter to RS-232 COMM port. I have always set this up in device manager under PORTS. MS eliminated it in the listing of devices on the latest PCs. Previous suggestion to find legacy under
Action, they now just give Help. No luck there. Am I finally out of luck with the converter?

 

Profilic USB-to-Serial comm port driver is not working

To help us to determine as to why the Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port on your computer is not working, I suggest checking the status of the device in Device Manager. Here's how:

1. Right-click the Windows key and select Device Manager.
2. Expand the Ports (COM & LPT) category.
3. Right-click on your Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port and click
   Properties.
4. Under General, look for the Device status.

You may also run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter. This automated troubleshooter will also help identify and fix issues that it finds.

1. Navigate to Settings > Update & Security.
2. Click Troubleshoot.
3. Under Find and fix other problems, click Hardware and Devices, then click
   Run the troubleshooter.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

PROLIFIC USB-TO-SERIAL COMM PORT WINDOWS 10

The final definitive guide for fixing the failure of the (PL2303) Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port driver in Windows 10, step by step:

First, install the latest driver for the PL2303 USB-to-Serial adapter from Prolific's website; then

Download older driver that is compatible with Windows 10:

1. Download the core driver files (.cab .sys .inf) for version 3.3.2.102 (32bit and 64bit files):

2. Uncompress into a directory.

Install older driver to fix error/failure:

1. Open Device Manager and right click on the failed Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port device;

2. Select "Update Driver software ...";

3. Select "Browse my computer for driver software";

4. Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" (other driver versions visible here);

5. Select "Have Disk ...", and then browse or paste the path to the "Prolific_Win8_x64_x86" directory;

6. Click Next to install;

7. Close.

Stop Windows from loading the latest driver and overwriting the fix:

1. Open "Device Manager";

2. Locate the adapter and check if the Exclamation mark is showing for the Code 10 error;

If the error doesn't show, remove and re-insert the adapter from the USB port until it does (this will load the latest version);

3. Right-Click on the failed device and Select "Uninstall";

4. Complete the uninstall process (delete installed files!) and remove and re-insert the adapter from the USB port. This will remove the latest version driver files but leave the compatible version in place;

5. Done! The failed driver will not load.

Please let me know if the steps here need modification due to error or changes in the OS. This worked for the Anniversary version of Windows 10. Cheers!
