Command to switch betwn 'Extend Desktop to this display' and 'Disconne

I was given a couple of extra computer monitors which are beyond great when you need the extra space but often are not needed. When they're not needed I keep them off but then the cursor sometimes disappears onto one of them. Is it possible to set up a script to switch the display setting between 'Extend Desktop to this display' and 'Disconnect this display' without going to the Windows Display Settings?

    :)

  2. How to apply other virtual desktop on a second monitor?

    Hello Toren,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

We understand your requirement in this regard.

Generally, extended display will consider both displays screens as one, by just increasing the display area to extent. So I guess creating separate Virtual Desktop on extended display will not possible. When you create or switch Virtual Desktop, then the
behavior will take place on both monitors at same time.

Say for example, you have Virtual Desktop 1 and Virtual Desktop 2. Now you had Internet Explorer running on Desktop 1 and Microsoft Edge on Desktop 2. When you're working on
Desktop 1, then you can able to see Internet Explorer running. If you move that to second screen and by switching to
Desktop 2 will bring Microsoft Edge to front by hiding the Internet Explorer from screen 2. Because switching the Desktop will take place on both screens, as I said it is an extended display.

Hope this will address your query.

Right click on desktop, open Display Settings and open

Advanced System Settings, connect your monitor and choose Duplicate these displays or Extend these displays,

click Apply and switch off and on your monitor.

Just go to Notifications Centre > Project, and select there.

You can choose what to display in there by going to Windows 10 Settings > System > Notifications & Actions > Quick Actions > Add/Remove to suit.

I don't want to do that. I want to set up physical switches on my desk that I can use to turn on and off monitors as I need them and your solution doesn't permit that. I need commands that can be set up in a batch file or something.

  6. For PC only it's C:\Windows\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /internal
    For extend it's C:\Windows\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /extend
I have shortcuts on my taskbar to do both of the above.

  7. The keyboard short cut to do it is Windows Logo key *Start + P then select what mode you want. A lot easier than going to the notifications area, if your just switching modes.

Thanks but how does this work if you have four monitors and won't be able to turn them on and off individually?

  9. I run triple monitors. When gaming I only use my main center monitor. I switch to PC only and my other two stop displaying. The one set as your main monitor is the one that stays on. I can leave the other two on or turn them of. Either way my cursor will never go onto them. As far as Windows is concerned they are not there. When I'm done gaming I switch back to Extend and all three are usable again. I do it with the shortcuts I posted above.

On my laptop I just use the *Start + P if I have my USB monitor plugged in. I hardly ever switch modes on it.

Just pointing out that *Start + P is the keyboard shortcut to the display modes menu.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I use my monitors in all kinds of configurations depending on what I'm doing (e.g. standing up but web browsing, I want to use only a top monitor; video editing, I want to use three monitors unless I want to follow instructions in which case all four; video gaming, just my primary monitor plus all kinds of nuanced tasks that require varying amounts of screen space) so I want to make it easier to alter configurations with keyboard shortcuts.

  11. You may need something like Display Fusion to do that. I don't know how, or if its even possible, to do it via command line etc.
