Completed Indexing later drops thousands of files, every week or 2

In my Windows 10, the Indexing completes at about 50,000 files but then a week or two later, my Search stops finding some files. I look at Indexing Options and it says about 25,000 files are indexed. I Rebuild it and it again completes at that 50,000 and my searches successfully find the missing files. But sometime later, Indexing again drops to that 25,000 level or so. This crazy cycle happens every 1-2 weeks.

    :)

Windows 10 - Understanding the Indexing information for Searching

I looked in detail at the indexing options and changed several file types and started to rebuild the entire index again, now watching the process regularly over a week's period (I expect the indexing to take up to two weeks). Initially the number of files
indexed continually rises, sometimes slowly, sometimes very quick (75,000 in an hour) - I assume based on the file type and whether file properties or file contents are being indexed.

However, the constant increase stops at some point (around 365,000), I am assuming when it gets to 90% or so (it's not finished yet) and then the numbers start to jump around, a slow increase, then a drop of a few thousand without any logical explanation
(i.e. alterations to files), then a faster increase and a small drop etc. Seems completely random. A sudden drop could be more that was indexed during a previous 12 hours of indexing. The total number currently indexed is about the same as 2½
days ago but there has been quite a bit of variation in between.

I suppose it will remain a mystery, and these numbers don't help in any way to estimate the time it will take.

Windows 10 Not Finding All Files, Even After Indexing

Windows 10 is not finding all files with a given string that I type into the Search box in Explorer. It is only giving me a partial (incomplete) list, but there are more files that satisfy my search.

Example: there are thousands of files with the string "resume" somewhere in the filename, but Explorer Search only brings back a dozen or so.

I have tried re-building all indexing, even by removing some disks that I don't need to make it faster. I always wait till the end to make sure the indexing is 100% completed.

    My steps:

    1. Control Panel -> Indexing Options
    2. Ensure my disk is listed (in my case, D:, an external WD-Passport hard drive)
    3. Just to be sure, I click Advanced.
    4. Under File Types, I make sure all extensions are included, there are thousands and they're all selected.
    5. I click the Rebuild button to do it again.
    6. After a while, the rebuilding is complete.
    7. Result: Windows 10 still not listing all my files for a given string.

I'm not to sure what else to do at this point. Is this a bug? Is it an issue with the WD Passport external drive?
