  1. Compounding Problems with new hardware

This may get long winded and I apologize for that.

Back when they were giving free upgrades from Windows 7 to Windows 10 I jumped in as soon as I could. I'm fairly confident in my software management and was able to successfully navigate the early bugs. Unfortunately, that old hard drive died and I had to purchase a new one. Ever since then I have not been able to get Windows 10 back on my computer. I didn't have the license key to Windows 7 since it came packaged with my prebuilt (I have a custom built today) so when the hard drive failed I had no option but to purchase either a copy of Windows 10 (I think around $250 at the time) or purchase Windows 8.1, which I could get for just $80.

My hard drive had crashed just a month after they said they pulled the "free upgrade" from the market so I thought I was screwed. So here I am, using Windows 8.1 for these past few years, being one of the few people who actually wanted Windows 10 at launch and praised them for actually providing the OS for free, Windows 10-less. Nothing I could do seemed to get me my Windows 10 back, not even using my mandatory Microsoft account I set up for the initial upgrade.

Now my CPU is going out and my Motherboard has AM3 socket which is difficult to find considering how obsolete it is. So instead I opted to start a new build with a Ryzen 5 3600 and an appropriate Motherboard, using as much of my old parts as I can. But, of course, I was going to have further compatibility issues. Now I'm reading that my Ryzen 3600 is incompatible with Windows 8.1 but if anyone has any other insight on this I would love to hear it. I am perfectly willing to upgrade but I don't have the money for it right now.

With my OS compatibility issue, and the fact that I wanted Windows 10 since it was launched, I started my research to see how much it would be to upgrade. Turns out, the first 5 Google results say I can still somehow upgrade to Windows 10 for free! I don't really believe these articles so I'm coming here to get confirmation. The sites claim that all I need is a valid Windows 8.1 key and to input it during installation of the new OS. Is this true? Because, I have that. Two, in fact (I have two computers at home).

Also, I think it would be best to ask this as well. If I upgrade to Windows 10 on my old Motherboard will it throw a fit when I change it? It will have the same storage drives, GPU, and only the RAM and CPU will be different. If you don't know that here I'll just go to r/techsupport or r/buildapc for further guidance.

I will be grateful for any insight and suggestions as I am starting to get worried about my good ol rig's health.

Windows 10 1709 System Restore problems...

That seems to be an attempt at Option 2 in the tutorial, which requires you to
    a. Boot to a command prompt (Did you?)
    b. You then seem to be mixing steps 3,4 and 5, thus your command is incorrect.

I suggest Option 1 is easier.

If you still have problems, please repost listing each specific step and saying which option from the tutorial you are using. Thanks.
