Discus and support Computer freezes and power button needs to be held to turn of in Windows 10 BSOD Crashes and Debugging to solve the problem; My Computer will sometimes freeze and i will need to hold the power button down in order to turn it off and sometimes instead it goes to a blue screen...     Computer freezes and power button needs to be held to turn of

    Computer freezing and requires power button to be held down to turn off and reboot PC.

    Hello. My PC recently froze again twice. Once coming out of sleep mode. I held the power button to turn it off and then back on, and then it froze again shortly after booting up. I have attached the logs in case this helps.

    For your suggestion - I had originally began freezing after using drivers that had been giving me no problems since 2022. I then updated to the latest driver (545.84) and continued freezing. I then reformatted my PC with a cloud download of Windows 10. For these reasons I do not think it is a driver issue, as I have tried two different drivers now and went through a reformat.

    Do you have any other suggestions?

    Use the power button to turn off the computer at Welcome screen

    Hi,



    Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.



    I understand that you want to turn off computer at the Welcome screen using the power button.



    Ideally, if no user has logged in to the computer, the computer will shut down by pressing the power button. However, I would suggest you to check the settings for power button. Refer the steps mentioned below and see if that helps:



    1. Press Windows key + X, and select
      Power Options.
    2. Click on Additional power settings.
    3. Now, click on Choose what power button does from the left pane.
    4. Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
    5. Select Shut down from the drop down for
      When I press the power button.


    If you are using Windows 10 Pro, you may also want to check the Group Policy Settings, refer the steps mentioned below:



    1. Press Windows key + R, to open
      Run       dialog box.
    2. Type gpedit.msc and click on
      OK      .
    3. Navigate to Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Power Management\Button Settings.
    4. On the right pane, double click on Select the Power button action (plugged in), click on
      Enabled and select Shutdown from the drop down for
      Power Button Action.
    5. Repeat step 4 for Select the Power button action (on battery).
    6. Restart the computer.


    If a user has logged in to the computer and then logs off from the computer, the computer will shut down by pressing the power button. However, if a user is logged in to the computer and locks the computer using the
    Windows key + L combination, the power button will not shutdown the computer. You will have to use the power button on the lock screen to shut down the computer.



    If you do not see the shutdown button, please refer the article Shutdown:
    Allow system to be shut down without having to log on    .

    Desktop Only Loads Windows when Using Power Button

    So i have an odd issue. I'm using an HP Pavilion (P6510Y) with Windows 7. It is freezing at the HP logo screen and not loading Windows.

    • If I press and hold the power button on the tower, the computer shuts off. If i press the power button to turn it back on, the computer correctly starts Windows.
    • If i have Windows open and go to the Start menu to select Restart, the computer freezes at the HP logo screen when trying to come back on.
    • If i have Windows open and go to the Start menu to select Shut Down, the computer freezes at the HP logo screen when I press the Power button to turn it back on.

    At first the computer was doing it no matter what and then i changed the boot order to load from the HDD instead of the cd disk drive. I ran the diagnostic and all of the internal components passed. I tried to do a system restore and it failed.

    I think my last option is to try a Factory Reset but before i do that i wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions?
