Windows 10: Computer freezes at various places

Earlier today, I restarted my computer to install a windows update. Everything was working fine. Later, my computer said it had to restart to install updates for McAfee livesafe so I restarted. After this, my computer stopped working, I was able to log in and start google chrome but then the taskbar froze and google chrome didn't work properly. I held down the power button to restart. Afterwards, my computer froze at the welcome screen. I restarted multiple times with the computer freezing at either the welcome or login screens. Occasionally I was able to log in and start google chrome but then the computer froze. I tried searching up fixes and put the computer into safe mode and was able to log in. I then took the computer out of safe mode and was able to log in. I started google chrome and then it froze. Google chrome became unresponsive and after a few minutes a black screen appeared. I was able to move my cursor. I'm not sure what to do.

My Computer keeps freezing

Hi Killa,

Computer freezing can be caused due to various reasons like virus infection, damaged windows registry keys, driver update failure, Irregular power supply, overheated CPU, third party application conflict and malfunctioning HDD controller.

I suggest you to place the computer in Clean boot and check if you face the issue.

Note:
Please go through the section: How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot of the Kb article to boot the computer in normal startup after fixing the issue.

If the issue persists, I suggest you to perform a SFC scan and check if it helps.



System File Checker is a utility available in Windows 10 that checks for system file corruption. To run it:

• Right-click (or press and hold) the Start button, then select Command Prompt (Admin).
• Enter sfc /scannow (note the space between "sfc" and "/").
