Computer freezes up constantly for several seconds at a time.

My computer will lock up constantly for several seconds at a time. At first I thought it was just with games but now I notice that it does it with everything. I've run my anti-virus (Avast!), chkdsk, sfc /scannow and I've defraged but the problem persists. I was looking up a solution and found someone with a similar problem on the SevenForums so I decided to register here and see if I could get some help with my problem.
They were asked to post re-occurring errors from their Application and System tabs in Event Viewer so I am just going to do the same. Hopefully that is right.

Hi, please download and run Crystal Diskinfo (free, easy to find). It gives a Good/Caution/Bad indication for your disk.

You have 16Gb RAM- can you confirm all is the same type- no possible mismatch.

Try Safe Mode for 'long enough' - do you experience any freezes?

Also please post a screenshot of your pagefile settings. (Icon to the left of the video icon above your post).

Just to confirm- did you run chkdsk and have your PC restart to run it?

I'd guess the last error deserves investigation. I'm wondering why the characters appear corrupted.

Ok so I ran chkdsk /f /r on startup and it cleared up all the errors that were showing up in the Application tab of Windows Logs in the Event Viewer, There are still a few under the System tab.

Run Spinrite on the drive. It has resolved issues for me before that were similar in nature.

Hi, Crystal Diskinfo - did it give a blue Good indication like the screenshot here?
CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World

And did chkdsk indicate all problems it found had been fixed?

Please advise whether freezes are still occurring- there are many possibilities remaining.

If they are, please try Safe Mode.

I got a yellow and a blue page. Not sure what that means.

I ran chkdsk /f /r overnight. When I came back in the morning it was at the login screen.

My comp is still freezing up but not as badly as it was.

Hi, your second indicates the drive is starting to fail. Hard disks are manufactured with extra sectors as disks aren't perfect, and to provide redundancy. As sectors fail, they are marked and 'retired'. As the number grows, well, eventually you've a bad disk.

Sorry, I realise I hadn't posted this for you (doing the same on 2 or three other similar threads!)
No need to run it again- just get the outcome. (MS has made that a bit obscure)
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

Now you can do a cross-check by downloading the trial of Hard Disk Sentinel - this is regularly given away, and can sit in your tray to warn you of impending disk failure. Of course, it's not the only such program.

At this point, we don't know for sure that your erratic performance is solely due to your disk. Could be software conflicts, RAM problems... but it's hardly worth investigating further until you've swapped it.

At this point- I have to ask:
    a. do you have full backups?
    b. have you been using any form of disk imaging, which would give you a quick and easy way to move painlessly to a new disk?
    c. do you have all your program keys?

It is unlikely you will be able to create a disk image at this point - you can try running Macrium Reflect (free) and create an image on an external disk, but you'll probably get a CRC error reading your disk.

    I recommend:
    - get a new disk
    - get one, say, twice as large as the amount of disk you're going to use as an external disk for disk images.

If you've not been using disk imaging, this is the painful way to discover its value.

Hi, that does suggest you might be in time to do create a disk image. That will protect you- so if your disk fails, you can readily restore the image to a new disk without reinstalling.

This doesn't address your freezing problems- its purely defensive and a routine procedure we strongly and repeatedly recommend.

Download and install Macrium reflect (free) - you'll need an external disk say bigger than twice your total used disk. Also create Macrium's boot medium, which includes a useful repair tool for non-booting PCs.

If you're lucky, you'll be able to create a disk image. If there are read errors - and maybe chkdsk has fixed some- then it will report a CRC error.

    Turning to your freezes:
Please post a screenshot of your task manager booted normally, organising any column of interest high to low.

Boot to Safe Mode- do you note any freezes?

Is this thing accurate? It says my hard disk's lifetime is only 9 more days! *cry
I had no idea it was that bad! I thought I was exaggerating! *cry
