Computer freezing up occasionally, mouse stops working and volume goes down without...

    Hello,

I forget how long I've had this problem as it is quite inconsistent. Occasionally, my mouse will freeze for a split second or two at best, but at worst, I have to unplug it and replug it to get it working again. There is no sound of a USB device disconnecting, so the best way I can describe it is that my mouse just stops working. Usually, when this happens, the sound on my speakers is reduced by a fair amount the volume slider is usually at 100 but if i slide it down to 99, the sound returns to the level it should normally be at and operates as normal from there. This does not seem to occur at all with my headphones which are plugged in to a separate jack. The issue is usually exacerbated when I'm playing games, where the mouse will stop working and sound will go down at a more frequent rate, and it gets annoying having to unplug and replug the mouse in the middle of one. If it occurs a lot during a game, I have noticed that the game and my PC will freeze, where hitting the restart button is the only way to fix this. Some days, the mouse freezing and disconnecting will occur more frequently, until I restart my computer, where these issues may dissappear or reappear, seemingly at random. If I notice it happening even on the desktop, I will restart until it stops happening so frequently so as not to disturb me. I have looked at event viewer and most of the time, not always, a security audit success event has occured at the same time as these things happening. I have found very few other users have this issue online. I have performed a clean reinstall and the issue still persists. If anyone could help me understand why this is happening and how to fix it, I would appreciate it.

    :)

  2. Mouse occasionally freezes after Creators update

    Hi,

There are many possible reasons why this issue is happening. Similar to the steps you tried, let's try to uninstall and reinstall the mouse driver to see if it helps. Follow the steps below:

    • Open Device Manager.
    • Click the arrow beside Mice and other pointing devices to expand.
    • Right-click on the mouse driver, then select Properties.
    • Go to Driver tab, then click Uninstall.
    • Restart your computer to automatically reinstall the mouse driver.
Note: After performing step 4, your mouse functions may stop working. Use your keyboard instead to restart your PC.

Get back to us with the outcome so we can help you out further.

External Mouse and Volume Keys on External Keyboard Stopped Working

I've been using an external mouse and keyboard with my laptop for a while now. A few days ago, the mouse stopped working. It's a wired mouse and the red light comes on when it's plugged in. At the same time, the top row of keys on my wired keyboard stopped working (the volume controls, mail button, home, customizable buttons, etc.). When I plug the mouse in, it appears under Other Devices in the Device Manager, listed twice as a USB Input Device. When I try to update the driver automatically, it says Windows was unable to. The mouse doesn't work in safe mode. I tried a wireless mouse as well and it doesn't work either. My external keyboard shows up under keyboards as an HID Keyboard Device and Windows says the best drivers for my device are already installed. I've tried all three USB ports and the mouse works on another computer. The built-in keyboard and touch pad on my laptop still work fine. What else can I do? Thanks in advance.
