Windows 10: Computer is unable to read CD-ROMs for games

I have a couple old CDs for Hot Wheels games I've owned for as long as I can remember. I have the games installed on my computer, and they worked perfectly fine before. The games both require you to put the CD in the computer before running the game application.


Since I think around a few months ago or so, my PC has been weirdly unable to recognize the disks. When I attempt to launch either of the games, all I get is a "please insert disc" screen.





This occurs even if I have the correct CD in my disk drive. Not even the game installer is willing to boot up; whenever I try, it still asks me to put the CD in, even if I already have. Again, these games worked completely fine before, on the same computer, and this issue only recently started occurring.


If it helps, the games are Hot Wheels: Stunt Track Driver 1 and 2, and my computer is a Dell XPS 8900.

I understand your concern, I would recommend you to manually update DVD/CD-ROM driver from the
Device Manager.

If the issue persists then follow the below method.

Step 2: I suggest you to uninstall the DVD/CD-ROM driver from the Device Manager and check.

Follow the steps to uninstall the driver.

• 
  Right click on Start button and click on Device Manager.
  
• 
  Search for DVD/CD-ROM driver and expand it.
  
• 
  Right click the device, and click Uninstall.
  
• 
  Restart the computer.
  
• 
  Right click your computer name in Device Manager and click
  Scan for hardware changes. Device manager scans your system and automatically reinstalls your device.
  

If the issue still persists then, I would recommend you to download and install the latest DVD/CD-ROM driver in compatibility mode from the manufacturer and check if it works.

  • Type Troubleshoot in the search box and press Enter.
  • Select Hardware and Devices.
  • Click Run the troubleshooter.
  • Allow the scan to complete, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the fix.
• Try another CD/DVD for further isolation. If your device was able recognize other
  CD/DVD then the issue is not hardware related.
