Windows 10: Computer name didn't showed up in Network section even with File sharing on

I've been trying to share my files using the File sharing feature on Windows.Before, I used the Sharing tab in my shared folder properties to share files. I've clicked the "Advanced Sharing" button, The "Share" option is checked. I've also clicked "Premissions" and checked "Full control".I shared it for everyone. I clicked "Share" and selected Everyone for the Network acess. I also set the premissions to "Read/Write"I also checked the "Network discovery" and "File and printer sharing" option for Private networks.Note: I use Private networks for file sharing and use Public networks if I don

Phantom computer name on network: clicking on it opens Media Player.

Hey @Bert Coules, did you turn network discovery on, on both machines and turn on file and printer sharing too? Note that it is setup by private / guest or public. Make sure your network is setup as a private network too. Don't enable sharing on guest or public, well, I wouldn't.

this can definitely be made to work, as i do it in my house easily.


that said, there is so many steps along the way you've ignored and not told us about, you REALLY need to go back to the basics and start from scratch.


share a folder, and see if you can connect manually via the IP address of the system.

do NOT ever expect the shares to magically just show up in the networking section of windows XP, that was an old, buggy, almost useless feature that never really worked right.

 

Network file sharing

under OS (C:\) Properties tab Sharing, in the section Network File and Folder Sharing, it shows C:\ as shared. It shows a Network Path as \\"computer name"\c , but the button or box, Share, is greyed out. In Advanced Sharing box Share this folder box is
checked and the Shared Name is (as expected) C. Under Permissions for C a single group "Everyone" shows Permissions, all as "allowed" Also I set password permission as off since this LAN has only two computers, each with one user.

I had originally set the network to require passwords but the popup box wouldn't except the entered name and password when entered and just indicates I do not have permissions set (although I do).

Also both computers are relatively new and run Windows 10 and in File Explorer both computers and the C drives show up as expected.

What am I missing?
