Windows 10: Computer ran out of battery during windows 10 upgrade. How do I fix?

Hello Friends!

I was performing a Windows 10 upgrade from Windows 8 but it was not plugged to a power source. Before the upgrade could complete, it ran out of power. Now each time I turn it on it attempts an "automatic repair" which fails each time. Please help me on how I can fix it without losing my data. I desperately need the solution as soon as possible. After you delete the downloaded files using Jennifers instructions, you can upgrade manually using the following instructions.

I was updating my computer through the update assistant when it ran out of power. My device doesn't have that much storage space, but I believe the files that were downloaded for the update were not deleted. Now I cannot update-- where can I go to delete
the update files?

 

Insert your Windows 10 ISO media and turn on computer, that should install it automatically. No guarantee that you will not lose your data. You should have;

1. Never attempted this upgrade without the computer plugged in.
2. Backed up all of your data before you attempted this upgrade.

I assume you bought a license for Windows 10.

 

Hello, your first priority is as you say to rescue your data. Assuming, that is, from what you say, that you don't have adequate backups.

We always strongly recommend people use disk imaging- if you had done so, you could easily have rescued your PC and had it back running as it was probably without technical help in under an hour. (e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage.

Backups
Now you need to either
- boot from a boot DVD or USB and rescue any data you haven't backed up to external storage

- but then that relies on yuo remembering what you have to back up, so the next method is better.
or
- boot from e.g. Macrium's boot disk, and image your C: - thus creating a full backup of the partition from which you can later extract anything you need.

Once you've created your backup post back.

What sort of license do you have for Win 8? OEM? Retail?

Clean install - outline only
Hopefully you will then be able to clean install win 10, using your Win 8 license, having deleted all partitions related to Win8.

Possible license options here:

That means you will have to reinstall all your programs.

 

Thank you guys for the suggestions. What if I wish to revert to Windows 8, Is it possible without losing my data?

 

Hi, there's not too much chance you will lose data- provided you copy off what you need before deleting the relevant partitions. Assuming you know where that data is, and how to access it.

What you lose is the time spent installing stuff and reinstalling Windows, and setting things up again as they were.

The point is, your system drive/partition is in an indeterminate state as far as Windows is concerned- partly copied , partly configured, corrupted system files..??? we've no idea at what point in the process the power died.

So in that respect, it's the same if you installed Win 95 or Linux.
