  1. Computer really slow after a Microsoft Defender offline scan

    Hi,

Yesterday I pretty randomly decided on running an offline scan, for the first time ever, just because I never ran one.

The scan completed in a few minutes, after which the computer restarted, and since then - it's working extremely slowly.

I tried restarting, looking if there are any new suspicious programs installed, if there's any virus found that might have been the trigger, but I couldn't find anything special.

The sluggishness is akin to using a remote computer or a very old one. Opening a folder takes about five seconds, moving windows around is "jumpy" think having the window jump from place to place at 5 frames per second, just being on the desktop and selecting with the mouse takes a second or two for the blue select animation to play, etc.

    My hardware:

    Processor IntelR CoreTM i5-9600K CPU @ 3.70GHz, 3696 Mhz, 6 Cores, 6 Logical Processors

    BaseBoard Product Z390 UD

Installed Physical Memory RAM 16.0 GB

500 GB NVMe SSD, around 100 GB free.

    GPU - GeForce RTX 2070

My idle memory usage, albeit with Chrome on, is around 6.6/16 GB. CPU at between 20%. Disk is close to 0%. I don't quite remember what my idle usage was before this.

Did this happen to anyone else, or can someone point me in the right direction?

    :)

Defender Periodic Scanning or Offline Scanning?

That link does suggest it's useful to use Defender offline scanning in addition to periodic scanning and a third party real time anti virus (e.g. Kaspersky).

    offline scan by win defender

    Hi,

To further assist you with your concern with Windows Defender, follow the steps below:

    • Open the Run window by pressing Window + R button.
    • Then type services.msc and hit "Enter".
    • Look for Windows defender service in the list and right click on it and select start.
    • Once Windows defender is opened try to do the offline scan on that window.

Let us know how it goes.
