I have had this win10 laptop for 6 months now, and all has been fine. This computer is supposed to have 8 gb of ram, quad core with 2.7 ghz. Now it is running awfully. I can barely open Google Chrome, even when every other process has been terminated. I know for a fact it is not a virus. Any help? Thanks

    :)

Hi, let's try the usual things.

    Disconnect all unnecessary external devices.

    1. Please post a screenshot of your task manager when your PC is nominally idle.
    2. If your resource monitor shows anything of interest please post a screenshot when your PC is nominally idle.
Make sure columns are organised by clicing the tab to show anything of interest at the top of the relevant column.
    3. How is it in Safe Mode?
    4. Download, install and run Crystal Diskinfo and post the single Window display for each drive.

    5. Please post a screenshot showing your page file settings. (Control panel, System....)

    6. History - are you aware of any recent changes you have made that nay be related to this?

    1. use CCleaner

    2. I would insist on using:
    - Adwcleaner
    - Kaspersky Rescue Disk

    3. update all your drivers (especially for the GPU)

    4. run the computer for a short time (even for 3 minutes) in Safe Mode and tell us if you see any difference

    5. perform chkdsk test

Quick update - Used CCleaner, did not help performance but cleaned up a ton of stuff, safe mode definitely helps

1- task man- nothing exceptional, although if that's your idle state I'd be wondering why there's 5% disk usage.
2- Resource Monitor: like this - if anything of interest (and as there isn't in task man, probably not relevant).

Note: a very helpful way to post screenshots is to use the icon above your post to the left of the video icon 'Insert Image'

    3. Safe Mode- ok, so that improves things, so now try a clean boot.
And again post a screenshot of your task manager,
    4. Ok, so your disk is good.
    5. Page file ok.
    6. Ok no known history.

Do you have system restore points available, prior to this occurring?

    From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:

Ok, not a disk or file system problem, so still to try - a clean boot (#6)
Safe Mode was much better- see if there's a problem with a start-up.

And check your system restore points- if you have one prior to that update, the scan done for affected programs before the restore starts should list it.

I will be gone for most of today, but how can I achieve a clean boot? I looked it up but when tried it, it was the same boot process. My last restore point was when I installed visual studio 2015, about 4 months ago, so that is not on the table.

From the forum tutorial section I have found you:
Clean Boot - Perform in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

    - or you could use a search engine...

    A clean boot means (roughly)
no user added start-up programs or services

So you can see what Windows is doing without added extras.

via msconfig + start-ups in the task manager.

Note: it can be a good idea to set a restore point (or even back up the registry) before doing this.

Alright, got a clean boot, but still not better. Seemed to be the same boot as normally.

To check you have done a clean boot, you should have fewer services running than normal, and any added 3rdparty startups should not be running (e.g. typically you will have nothing in the system tray bar your AV if any, clock, internet connection icon).

Can you see a difference to when you boot normally?

    And check here:

Computer speed went to about 1/8th of what it should be [IMG]

    - these should be disabled

If you are convinced you have done a clean boot, and there's no change in boot time, you need to examine the difference between what's running in Safe Mode and what's running after a clean boot - or do a technical analysis on your boot time (which is possible but I've never done it, so would need to research it or leave this for someone else to advise).

Note that some drivers are loaded when you do a clean boot which are not loaded in Safe Mode, e.g. graphics, and your internet connection.
