  1. Confused after upgrading to pro

I was upgrading from home to a pro edition. After doing a clean install of windows pro from a bootable media, it seems like the license is already activated even though I did not enter a pro product key. This is on a pc that was bought new with windows home installed from the manufacturer.

A quick check of the currently used product key (non-generic) shows a different key from the bios and the pro product key (after entering it). Im pretty confused to what happened and what I should do with the pro product key.

  2. Can't upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Pro

    Hi Bill,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community. We apologize for the inconvenience caused and will assist you in the best possible ways.

I suggest you to download and create an installation media for Windows 10 Pro form the link provided below:

    Download Windows 10

After the installation media is created, suggest you to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro from the installation media. When the upgrade asks for product key, enter the product key purchased for Windows 10 Pro. If it does not accept, suggest you to skip the activation
step. After the Operating System is installed, suggest you to activate by phone by following the steps below:

    • Press “Windows key + R” and type “slui 4” and press Enter.
    • Select the Region from the list and click Next.
    • Call the Toll-Free number provided on top and can activate via phone.

Hope this helps. Keep us posted on the status for further assistance.

    Hi Karlrenaut,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community.

Along with the suggestions provided by mlg63, you can refer to my suggestions as well.

The basic requirement for upgrading to Windows 10 Pro for free is you should have a Windows 8.1 Pro installed and activated. The questions you are asking are bit confusing. So need more and exact information about what exactly you are trying to do.

    • What happens when you try to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro?
    • When you say normal methods what are you referring to?
    • Did you use the same product key to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro from Windows 10 Home (paid for Pro key)?
