Windows 10: Connect to external monitor as Extend Mode, If I try to re-connect, all application would...

I have the latest Win10 RS5 OS version.

When my laptop connect a external monitor with the dock, I always drag the PPT/Word/Application to the external monitor for working. Then if I try to unplug the dock and re-plug, all application would stay on my laptop screen... So I need to drag again to the external monitor, is it expected behavior? Why the systerm can not recorder the customer operation? If any settings I can set to fix the defect? Please help clarify it, thanks!

Connecting to external monitor

I just upgraded to Windows 10, but am unable to connect my Lenovo X1 Carbon to an external monitor (tried two separate monitors). Before it would automatically detect the monitor, now it only has 1 listed when I go into Settings / Display. I found the "Windows
button + P" option online, but when I highlight Duplicate or Extend I am unable to "select" or "enter" them.

How can I make Windows detect my external monitor? (I am using the same cord that has always worked to connect my monitor before.) Thanks!

 

low resolution when connecting to external monitor

I have an odd situation. I connected an external monitor to my laptop, select 'second screen only' (or 'duplicate') and the resolution is low (e.g. cannot see task bar, text is choppy). However if I change mode to 'Extend' and move each application from
laptop screen to external monitor everything is fine. What I find more annoying, is the external monitor was working correctly yesterday (not using the Extend option). I'm not sure why it stopped working. I did not reboot the laptop last night. I've tried
changing resolution and scaling settings without any luck.

The laptop is a lenovo t470 running windows 10 prof. I use a vga to hdmi connector for this laptop as there is no VGA port.

The monitor is a DELL E228WFP

I tested this setup on an older lenovo t410 and the Dell monitor and it works as expected.

I tested this setup using a t470 and a newer ASUS monitor and it worked as expected

I don't understand how the extend option displays text correctly but the other options do not.

Or is there a way, in Extend mode, to set the external monitor as the primary monitor?

Connect external monitor

Trying to connect external monitor to x1 Carbon Lenovo Ultrabook running windows 10. When I open the Project window and select Extend it reverts back to PC screen only when the project window closes.
