It clear the solution is a system reset before you turn your rental car in. The problem each manufacture has different procedures to perform this function. Better to know what your renting before you rent it.

Please be aware even if you do not get the Windows 10 app, you can still download Windows 10 as a .ISO file, create a bootable copy and upgrade your system.

I had reserved my copy of the Windows 10 Upgrade the day that gwx appeared, and sometime later had to reinstall Windows 7 when I moved the HDD to my new custom built machine due to the different hard disk controllers maybe a week ago. After all the updates
installed I wondered why the icon didn't reappear in my tray. I searched about and found that the folder might not be there. Went through system32 and the GWX folder is present, executables, dll files and all, but no tray icon. Here's what I tried so far (Note
that Windows is activated, I have SP1, the update to allow GWX is installed, and my hardware meets the Win10 upgrade requirements):

-Check if the icon is hidden in the tray: Didn't work

-Manually launch GWX.exe from its folder: Didn't work

-Manually run the "refreshgwxconfig-B" task in Task Scheduler: Didn't work

-Set "UpgEx" and "UpgExU" to "Green" in regedit (UpgExU wasn't present so I added it): Didn't work

-Removed the key "REDUCED" under "UpgradeExperienceIndicators": Didn't work

-Added DWORD "DisableGWX" and set it to a 0: Didn't work

-Used the Microsoft provided fix "win10fix_full.bat": Didn't work

-Used the alternate fix "ReserveWindows10.cmd" (the one with four options): Didn't work

-Uninstall and reinstall the required windows update: Didn't work

The registry value of "IconVisibility" is a 1, and I'll assume that means on, so my questions are, is the reservation linked to the email address I provided to the applet before reinstalling or to the (now overwritten) OS? Because if it's to the OS then
I'm out of luck to reserve because this icon just won't show up, and, are there any other ways to possibly get the icon to appear? Thanks.

 

I would think that the rental agency would know that you reset it, and it may not be able to be done without the password..

 

All you need is the ignition key/fob. No passwords needed or used. But the procedure is different for each model.
