  1. Connected Devices Platform Service - What does it do?

Since the Anniversary update I've had an error in Event Viewer tellng me that "The Connected Devices Platform Service service terminated with the following error:
    Unspecified error"

With an Event id of 7023.

I cannot find for the life of me what this service does, I've looked on Black Viper's website and it isn't mentioned. Googled and cannot find anything definitive about it.

I set it to Manual - Trigger Start ( it was on Automatic - Delayed Start ) and the errors stopped from which I assume it wasn't being used for anything. I've now disabled it and nothing has stopped working as far as I can tell thus far but...I'd really like to know what it does, something a little more understandable than the MS description of "This service is used for Connected Devices and Universal Glass scenarios", which to me at least is somewhat less than helpful.

Edit: I forgot to mention if I try to start it manually I get the same error. I've run sfc/scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and they both complete without error.

Can anyone enlighten me please ?

    Many Thanks.

    :)

  2. The Connected Devices Platform Service service hung on starting.

I bought a Seagate Firecuda 2 TB hard drive to redo my Dell XPS 8900 Windows 10 Pro. I used Dell's Recovery Image. This process took over 8 hours. I let it run all night. The next morning I did all the necessary questions asked by Microsoft to get the computer
setup. After that it took some time to load everything. I did notice that some of the icons took a long time to load in the Task Bar.

After loading a few programs and restarting, it takes forever to load the Task Bar icons and Desktop icons. This still happens after all the updates for Windows 10 and Office 2016 were installed.

I check the Event viewer and there are a number of Errors in the System. 1. The Connected Devices Platform Service service hung on starting. 2. The server {4991D34B-80A1-4291-83B6-3328366B9097} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout. 3.

I looked at the Services and noticed that the ?Connected Device Platform service" is set for Automatic and Running. There is a "Connected Platform Service User service_516e5". The second one doesn't look right to me. I tried to search for that and got no
    results.

Does anyone know what the problem may be? Hat to redo the whole process again.

The Connected Devices Platform Service service hung on starting.

    Hi,

This service is associated with Bluetooth, or Printers & Scanners as well as music players, storage devices, mobile phones, cameras, and many other types of connected devices.

Here's a good article about this:

Hope this is to any help!

    Kind regards,

Connected Devices Platform Service - What does it do?

I have the same error. Not finding a lot about it. I noticed when doing web searches, a lot of people have "Connected Device Platform" instead of "Connected Devices Platform".

I did come across these bits of information:

Connected Device Platform Service (CDPSvc) Defaults in Windows 10
Connected Device Platform Service (CDPSvc) Defaults in Windows 10

on this page, it says this service is disabled by default on Windows 10 version 1511.

Connected Devices Platform Service - Windows 10 Service
Connected Devices Platform Service - Windows 10 Service - batcmd.com

it says this new Windows 10 service is disabled by default in all Windows 10 v1511 editions, but set to automatic in v1607 (Anniversary Update).

I've checked 3 laptops (1-Home, 2-Pro) and 1 desktop (Pro). The 3 laptops are on version 1511 and all 3 have this service disabled. However, on the desktop, the only PC upgraded to the Anniversary Update (version 1607), it's set to automatic delayed start. I know the laptops haven't been touched, so that's definitely the default in version 1511.

I think the default has been changed to "Automatic (Delayed Start)" in version 1607 since that's what I'm seeing on my PC. Still don't know exactly what this service is for except the description:

"This service is used for Connected Devices and Universal Glass scenarios"

    Connected Device Platform Service
    Connected Device Platform Service

Someone here said it was "associated with Bluetooth, or Printers & Scanners as well as music players, storage devices, mobile phones, cameras, and many other types of connected devices.".

    A Twitter thread here:
    WalkingCat on Twitter:

mentions "Xbox/SmarGlass stuff" and "Project Rome".

Microsoft to ease app-handoff with Windows 10 and beyond with 'Project Rome'

Microsoft to ease app-handoff with Windows 10 and beyond with 'Project Rome' | ZDNet

I don't have bluetooth or wireless on my desktop and don't have any kind of "connected devices" besides printers, scanners, and external USB stick/hard drives. I disabled the service and rebooted, no more 7023 errors. Everything still seems to be working fine.

  5. Thank you so much tahlyn for such a comprehensive reply. You've found out more information than I could!

I have a wireless keyboard and mouse attached to mine as well as the usual collection of printers, external drives and other paraphernalia and it all still works fine.

I think you've hit the proverbail nail on the head when you say it was disabled in V1511 but set to automatic in V1607. Mine was working fine in the previous version so I think I'll leave it disabled, I hate to see errors appearing *Biggrin

But thank you once again for your excellent reply.

How has that been working for you, having disabled the service? Does anything seem to be affected aside from the error being gone?
I tried setting it to manual figuring if something really needed it, it could start it and if not, nothing would happen, but the error still pops up.
Disabling the service seems like the next step then.

Connected Devices Platform Service - What does it do?

As we all know, "No Good Deed Shall Go Unpunished." This forum's power user (and maestro) fdegrove just helped me with one problem related to this service, but maybe it's just the beginning of many problems with this service.

There seem to be a bunch of issue-threads around the web regarding CDPusersvc, which might be Connected Devices Platform Service. Maybe this excellent forum and its power users can give us a global fix.

First, I got a particular error regarding "CDP Activity Store", and fdegrove walked me through the fix. See Windows 10 Event ID 10010 and 10016 Errors With DistributedCOM and following posts. (But if you have the same issue, you really need to read that thread from the start.) So we fixed that 10016 error.

Second, I got a new error 10010 server timeout regarding "CDP User Service Notifications Host". See Windows 10 Event ID 10010 and 10016 Errors With DistributedCOM and fdegrove's undoubtedly sage response in the same thread.

Third, I have another new Event Viewer error message with this CDP thingy.
This is my third separate error with CDP ! (By the way, I am assuming that "CDP" means "Connected Devices Platform", but please correct me if I'm wrong.)
    Here it is:Log Name: System
    Source: Service Control Manager

    </EventData>
    </Event>
I like that - "Unspecified Error" !! Good one, Microsoft.

Fourth, there are other interesting threads around the web that indicate this is a new "feature" in the Anniversary update for Win 10, but it has its sinister aspects. See these two for example:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com...10itprogeneralhttps://chanmingman.wordpress.com/20...or-code-15100/Another web site (that's nasty in unrelated ways so I won't give the link) says the following, and I noticed he is right about the five random trailing digits in my own Services list:Removing Telemetry and other unnecessary services

First, click start, type "Services" and open it. You will find a huge list of Windows Services, most of which are fine and safe, but others send data to Microsoft.
Find a service called CDPUserSvc_xxxxx, where xxxxx are 5 randomly generated character (yes, Windows is using literal malware techniques to prevent automated removal of this trash).
Fifth, I cannot even start this service. I get the 7023 error messages in event viewer. When I go to services, I see that this is not running. When I try to start it, I get this error message:

Connected Devices Platform Service - What does it do? [IMG]

So, will some of the experts here let us know what this CDP monster is, how to fix it and what to do with it?

Also, please comment on my Third and Fifth new errors above.

    Thanks to all.

  9. Those CDP services can be disabled like this. Run CMD as admin and copy/paste, then restart.

    sc config CDPUserSvc start= disabled
    reg add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\PimIndexMaintenanceSvc" /v "Start" /t REG_DWORD /d "4" /f
    reg add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\UserDataSvc" /v "Start" /t REG_DWORD /d "4" /f
    reg add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\UnistoreSvc" /v "Start" /t REG_DWORD /d "4" /f

Tairiku - Thanks. But, first, what are these services, and why would I want to disable them?

  11. Nobody really knows, it is not like MS shares info with users, but as suggested above, it is most likely related to touch devices. Those devices cost as much as a car, so if you do not have them, most likely, you can safely disable them.
