    Raid Drive on Windows 10

Original title: HardDrive Errors or software error or both???

    Asus Z97 Pro AC 3.1

    I7 4790K

    Asus Strix GTX 970

    16 GB Corsair Vengeance 2400

    Seagate Hybrid 1TB (main drive)

    Windows 10 64 Pro

I have an issue I can not seem to make ANY sense of. I have purchased a few months ago a WD BLUE 1 tb hard drive. Worked great (extra storage)..... Also have an old 500GB Samsung drive from an old laptop.

The WD stopped working the other day. Used WD software to scan, bad sectors. One thing that stood out was it was listed as a raid drive. Uninstalled and reinstalled the driver to the same result. Have tried wiping/recovering/scanning with multiple software's.
Get a CRC error in windows, won't initialize. Figured that drive was kapuut.

The older Samsung drive on the other hand worked great, then stopped around the same time (within a week...) Just now I was looking at it... ALSO INSTALLED AS A RAID DRIVE...

IT IS LISTED AS A 1TB DRIVE IN WINDOWS.... This is a 500gb drive. I have triple checked the wiring and verified the correct disk spots..... I am confused.... So freaking confused!!! I don't know if the drives are bad, if one drive is bad, or if it is software
    related.... (raid drivers)...

Two months back I experimented with combining the two extra drives into a 500gb raid0 strip. Have long uninstalled and reformatted both drives. They have both been working storage mediums up until recently. I have re-flashed the bios with the latest version,
set default settings in the bios ensuring the mobo raid controller was disabled.... I am out of ideas.....

  3. Need help with connecting external pc to used for raid storage

Basically I want to set up raid in a separate pc to be used only for the hard drives.

But I don't know how I would best connect this raid setup into my computer.
    • Do I use a NIC card to gigabit over multiple channels?
    • Or perhaps a really long sata III cable?
    • I don't want to connect it over the network. I just want to directly connect it.
    Goals:
    • Access data quick
    • Keep hard drives external to PC
    • Ease of use
    • Keep costs down (hence DIY PC instead of prebuilt NAS)
    • Expandability (hence DIY PC instead of prebuilt NAS)
    How do I do this?

    See this illustration.

    RAID

    Hi David,

You can create a raid with external drives in DiskManagement (Software-Raid), not the most performant solution if it's USB connected drives due to the possible high usage of the USB bus.

If you want to protect external data from a drive failure, with Raid 1 (Mirror) you might want to take a look at external drivers that have this built-in (example: MyBook Duo from WD)

If you want to mirror you internal drive in this raid set, it's best to get a 2nd drive with the same speed & capacity as the 1st one & connect it with e-Sata if possible. (if this is your operating system drive this might require a reinstall of you machine
    depending on the hardware)
