connecting/disconnecting to another computer's files on the same network thru IP address

So I'm not too tech literate, but essentially my dad made it so that if i were to type, \\192.168.0.XX into file explorer from my Computer lets call this MYPC, it would allow me to access files on my mom's work PC lets call this MOMPC.

I recall the first time i made the connection from MYPC to MOMPC via file explorer, after typing \\192.168.0.XX and pressing enter, I was prompted to enter my mom's log in password. after getting past that prompt for the first time, I never ever had that prompt pop up again whenever I could enter the IP address to access some files off MOMPC. I'm assuming MYPC is now always searching for MOMPC files thru our network, and it's possibly causing some speed issues on our network.

The help I'm asking for is I would like to know how to disconnect MYPC from MOMPC.

    Things to note
    - speed issues POSSIBLY occur whenever MOMPC is turned back on

    - pinging is successful when MOMPC is on, unsuccessful when off.

At this point, i'm trying anything from deleting memorized address in file explorer, to pinging in CMD to trigger a prompt that would let me disconnect from MOMPC instead of connect to MOMPC

    Please help me!!!

PS: I also didn't know whether to post this in FILES,FOLDERS & STORAGE or NETWORK & INTERNET topic

    :)

  2. Another computer on this network has same IP address

Your computer believes that the network address (IP address) it's using is the same as another device on the network. Now in the normal scheme of things this shouldn't happen if DHCP is working on the router / PCs etc. You say there are no other devices
in the house, what about smartphones, sky on demand box etc etc? If these use your internet they will get an IP address - its how devices connect and communicate on a network.

Quick way to try to resolve the conflict - try to get a new IP for the computer.

Press the Windows key and R

The run box will pop up, in here type cmd

The cmd (command) box will pop up, in here type ipconfig /release

Once this has run, type ipconfig /renew

Once this has finished it should have assigned a new IP address

    Good luck!

  3. Two computers on network with same IP address

    Hi Bob,

You might be getting this error because more than one computer is using the same IP address, which is resulting in a conflict. If you are setting IP addresses manually using static IP addresses, it is important to check that each
network device has a unique IP address.

If your router automatically assigns IP addresses using DHCP, you can try releasing and renewing your computer's IP assignment by following the steps below:

    • Click Start.
    • Type cmd in the search box, and then press Enter.
    • At the command prompt, run the following commands in the listed order:
      • Type ipconfig /release and press Enter.
      • Type ipconfig /renew and press Enter.

We also recommend that you check your router settings for any conflicts in the DHCP settings. Additionally, check the manufacturer's website or support page for an updated driver for your router.

Update us with the outcome and if you need further assistance.

  4. connecting/disconnecting to another computer's files on the same network thru IP address

Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer

Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue. I have windows 10. What should I do? I've been seeing this off and for the last year or so.
