Windows 10: Connecting old laptop to wifi, to be able to reset password

Opened up an old laptop I haven't used in a couple of years. I've forgotten the password. I'm trying to use the "forgot password" option, but the laptop needs to be online. I've opened up the networks icon at the bottom right, but neither my home wifi nor my phone hotspot show up as options to select as a network. Several other options show, but not mine. Not really sure what to try next. The home wifi is not hidden, it's in use on several devices including my desktop, sitting next to the laptop, which is showing full signal strength.I'm not even sure what version of windows is running o

reset laptop password

i could not figure out what forum this should go in, so feel free to move to whatever forum it should be in.
a friend just called, and said he has 2 daughters and 2 dell laptops. his daughters have lost the password to both laptops. is there a way to reset the password without a full reformat? he said his daughters have a lot of music, pictures, ect. and wants to avoid reinstalling windows.
i know that a long time ago there was a jumper on the motherboard that would reset the password on a regular pc. is there such a jumper on a laptop? or is there any free software that would let him reset the passwords? he can not afford a dell tech to fix, and i told him i would see if there was a way to reset it without a format. thanks!
he called me from out of state and due to a bad connection i couldnt find out what model laptops they are. thanks again! sam

 

Phone won't connect if I change wifi password

The new password is definitely allowed and saved - all my other devices connect with no problem every time I change wifi passwords (There are 2 desktops, 1 laptop and 2 other phones using my wifi). It's just this Lumia 520 which doesn't connect.
Or am I missing something?

This post states that you did'nt Apply the router config after changing the password.

Possible the router memory is bad or not saving new setting
Change the password reboot the router , check after in router if new password saved
If not, reset router to factory default and re setup
check if setting saved after reboot

If do change router password the network will need to be deleted off phone and connect again (or it trying to connect to old saved wifi password ) or could manually change it on phone and save ( as others have stated )
